New Solenoid
New Battery
New battery cables
New resistor(the post in the old one was cracked in 2 places)
New connections
and I also charged the battery.

Result is it still just clicking.
I pulled the starter off and tried it and the starter wouldn't engage. My only conclusion is the starter burned up. When I put in the new battery It started right up, and died and from then on the solenoid just clicks. Frustrated!!!

I think you should take that starter to a shop
that repairs them and has the equipment to test them. That may be a defective solenoid. I've
installed new points and and a condenser and the engine would hardly run. I replaced the new points with old and it ran perfect. Took the
points back and they gave me another set. No problem with the next set. Hal

There are two little flat copper bars just under the nut that holds the cable on the outside of the starter they are usally just soldered on if you tighten the nut and it actually turns the brass stud on the starter it will break them off in side or they twist and hit the windings on the armiture or what ever the thing that spins inside is called . I would take the end cover off and check that maybe. JON

I took the starter apart and it wasn't all gunked up like rusty said, and the post were still connected. Well anyway I was just tinkering around. I got it back togheter and put it back on the tractor and hooked everything back up. I turned the key and the starter turned. Boy I thought fireworks would shoot up into the air and my problems were solved, but then it stopped and it now clicks again. I definitley think it's a starter problem now.

Why do you need a solenoid? Even if the M has been converted to 12 volt, you still don't need a solenoid. Unless you have a key ignition switch or something?

Here's my 2 cents worth I think you have a bad ignition key switch or wires that short out going to the coil and or starter relay just my thoughts Brooks

It has had a sloppy key ignition put on along with it's ugly cut throught the hood 12 volt conversion. It would be nice to have a push button ignition on it though.

Take that starter apart, see what the brushes look like. Also, I had a starter just quit one day, it had been working great. I found that there was a bunch of crud built up around the brushes, grease, brush material, etc. I used some spray brake cleaner to get all that crud out, then dryed with compressed air. Never replaced the brushes, it worked just like a new one after that.

Two quick items, Take a test light (or a tail light and socket with wires) and ground one end to the frame. Take the other wire and hold it on the heavy wire going into the starter from the solenoid. Click the key as normal. if the light lights the starter is open and needs brushes or more. if the light does not light it is the solenoid, wires, or battery.
