Water In The Belt-Pulley Gearbox?

How does all the water get in the belt-pulley gearbox? I just took the top off my H transmission, and when i removed the belt pully I got at least half a gallon of water out of it. I expected water in the rear-end, but not the belt pulley. I don't see any way the water can get in the pulley gearbox unless the gears sling it up when the transmission is running. Anyone else ever find this?

The trans. gears do sling oil into the belt pulley gearbox.

My M had a cup or two of water in the belt pulley when I pulled it off. I figured it just came around the shaft over time and condesation.
