Transmission Cover--your thoughts

Planning to remove the transmission cover this week end. Two bolts in the back are broken off. Plan to take the cover off and remove the stubs with a pipe wrench.

My question is after all the bolts with heads are removed, how do I start to lift the cover? Keep in mind I will have two stubs in the back that will offer some resistance.

Charles.... It can be easily done with two people. Once you pry up on it to free it up from the gasket and gunk, get in a good position behind the rear axles and lift straight up, remember your three shifter rails/forks are dangling from underneath. You don't want ding these as you move it up an out. Maybe you're completely removing your gas tank first??... you could just remove the front tank support and then tie that end up to a rafter or something above. Just removed my cover to get at the shifter rails; four out of my five detente springs were shot. It's a great opportunity to get a good look at other problem areas and to see just how every is put together in the tranny.Good luck.

The way I did mine was to pry it up enough to get two bolts in two of the opposing holes and attach a cable or chain. Then lift it off with my engine hoist.

Thanks. Just trying to think this out and not make a mistake. Several months ago a fellow wrote that he had cracked his. I am going to take it real easy.

it's going to have to come straight up but i guess you know that. Working by yourself just lift one end a little and stick a screwdriver in the crack. keep alternating adding more bait til you get it clear of the shifting forks.

I just took mine off a H a couple of days ago. The front end was cracked at the rear of the belt pully opening. Been thet way for years it looks like. Their are 3 dowl pins in the case, and the crack was in the front dowel hole. I thought it was just a minor grease leak before I took it apart. After I got the belt pully box off and saw the crack, I started working from the front toward the back. I got it up high enough to get 4- 7/16 nuts under the cover and then screwed 12 inch pieces of 7/16 all-thread into the case, and through the nuts Then I used the nuts for jacks so I could raise the cover. I evenly. It took a little longer, but I'm a one man operation, and that cover is pretty heavy. Also didn't want to finish breaking the cover.
