I know this is off the subject...but am curious what the price of gas is out there. In western KY it averages about $2.05. Rumor has it that it is $2.15 in Evansville, IN. Wonder if the high prices are here to stay?

Barring a severe economic collapse, which, by the way, now appears likely, I believe that all of us have seen the last $2.00 gasoline. I expect $3.00 by next summer, again barring economic collapse.

Tailhunter If you want to spend all you money on gas fine. Don't tell the rest of us to do so. The thing about other countries gas price is most of it is tax. Italy has about $3.50 or $4 tax a gallon. So the gas alone is not that bad.

The price of gas is just a minor irritation for the well-to-do. The ones it hits hardest are the average Joes (or Janes)working at jobs that have seen little or non-existent wage increases. But hey, who cares about them? Now we hear that interest rates are going up because "the economy is doing good". If this is a good economy I hate to think what a bad one will be like!

If we can't get 30 miles to a gallon today how couls a 455 in a custom cruser get 20 in 1972 talk about a lead sled. Maybe you guys like paying 3 4 $ per gallon I don't, but then everything else is going up, or don't you see that. I know I am dompmer then hell but not that domp. The thing is back in 1950 we had a ford pickup that got 20 miles to the gallon at 70 miles then they went down to about 5 miles in the late 60's. Do guys realy believe everyting the auto people say. Like I said I might be dump but not that dump. Pay the $3 $4 a gallon and like it if you want I don't and I will not like it.

Higher prices are here to stay until two things happen. 1. The U.S is allowed to explore and drill for more oil, thus reducing the dependence on foreign crude. 2. More refineries are allowed to be built as at the present, our refineries cannot keep up with the demand for different mandated blends.

Oh ya, $2 gas is here to stay. Expect $2.50 by summer, $3 within a year or two. Food prices need to go way up too. Funny thing is new vehicles at $30,000 - 40,000 and nobody says a word.

Gas is CHEAP here..... in reply to Jesse, 03-23-2005 18:25:23
It is $1.95 or so here in ST Louis but it should be $3.00! Think about it. When I got my first car in 1960 gas was $.33 cents a gallon and I was making about $100 a week. When I retired I was making over 10 times that much. Nickel candy bars are now $.69! Etc, etc... meaning inflation has gone up about 10 -12 to one. Gas should cost OVER $3.00! I don"t suppose that"s the answer you wanted to hear. In 1960 very few cars got 20 MPG either.

Rcubed: My dad's 1957 six cylinder Chevy sedan gave 26 mpg. I'm talking Imperial gallon. Today my Buick LeSabre 6 cylinder gives me 26 mpg. To me 48 years and no change. Your US gallon being 80% in size of Imperial gallon, 20 mpg US would be close.

My brother tried one of those little imports, and he said, yes you can get 35 mpg if you spend $100. per month keeping it tuned up.

The big three are conserned about all the suv's on the lost when all this hits the fan we will all hert. I don't feal bad for the auto makers they could have made every thing do better on milage. Sure some will say no but I have the experence on 2 different engines, it can be done. When will the people in the US demaned it, maybe when the money runs out as you said. And if Nebraska has 10, 12 cents more tax why is Iowa gas the same price.

Dixieland: You've hit the nail on the head, although for a lot of them I think they have long since run out of money. It will just take until they run out of credit.

Public could take control of this situation, just do about 20-30% less driving. I suppose they could sell the house and live in car, suv or mini-van. A lot of folks are never home, so I assume they are expermenting with this. Then they could turn a lot of dollars into gas dollars.

I travel a lot and I can't figure out why fuel is the most expensive right in my home county in eastern WI of anywhere until you get maybe 100 miles from New york city. Diesel is 2.32 or so.
