I need to do the brakes on my 300U. The left brake doesn't work at all and the right one barely stops the tractor. My question is, can I still use the tractor if I have one of the brakes tore apart? I haven't got into them yet but I know its a job I won't get done right away and I'll have to use the tractor in the mean time. Thanks

Randy that is only about an hour job so just take the time I don't think you want to drive it with one brake off the pinion shaft could come out.

The disk brakes on late letter, and early # series are problematic. There are three balls between two center plates which ramp away from each other. these get rusty and pockets wear in the ramps. I believe the tractor will operate with no parts (except the shaft sticking out) but I do not recommend this course of action. you might say that the break is inoperative now, but that doesn't stop the tractor. The r&r of the assembly, cleaning/sanding of the balls, pivots, and springs, and lubing the balls and ramps with a thin film of extreme temperature silicon grease compound (not silicon spray -, not petroleum anything)is not hard (about two hrs).

Always use new balls and clean the ramps and use powder grafphit not grease for a lub. and some time it is nessasary to mill some off the drums because of ware on the inside took me a long time to figure that out to make them realy stop.
