I wanted to add to your post from last night about the skip . Dont always think that if you got all new plugs and wires that it cant be that I have pulled bad plugs and bad wires out of boxes a few different times and I am sorry to all those guys out there that dont agree but Champions do work the best in Letter series tractors like the D15 or D18Y or D21s sounds like alis chalmers yuck. Any ways dont be afraid to pull the plugs swithch them around or wires specially if you can find the plug thats skipping before hand maybe ck the manifold right after starting for one of the tubes not getting as hot as the rest pulling a plug wire at a time with rubber handeled plyers off the plugs listen for a difference in the sound of the motor Or if you ran it for a while look at the plugs for one thats darker ,Wetter,Alot of times the plug socket can crack the porcylen and they will short and you wont even notice it. Also if you dont mind asking Who are you or your Ebay handle. I will open my email so you can tell me without posting if you want. Keep me informed on the old girl. JON

Good advice.

I want to add that pulling the wires from the distributor cap reduces the chance of getting bit as opposed to pulling them from the spark plug. As soon as you pull it, the wire is dead. When you pull from the spark plug, the wire is still hot.

An old man showed me that one day on an oilfield gas engine that was running away. He reached up and pulled the wire from the mag to kill it. We had just got it started and the governer hung up. By grabbing the wire and pulling out of the coil he only got bit once or twice and saved the engine (he claimed he didn't get bit at all). This was fast thinking as the old engine took off and I was trying to engage the clutch to load it up on the well. He later told me that was stupid on my part because the engine could have oversped the well and pulled the string in two and we would have had a real story to tell the boss. The fuel valve was a hard to turn gate valve with no handle, so the plug wire or the clutch were the only quick methods we had to control the engine. The governer was inaccessible on top of the engine.

In this day and age, I suppose the company would want you to back away and let it throw a rod, but back then part of doing a good job was preserving the equipment you were working with.
