greetings
I am in the process of rebuilding my super m, it appears to have a 4 1/8 inch bore and piston pins that are 1.310" the pistons had a casting number of IH 4081 they are the stepped head. my problem is I can't read the serial number I think it is 50?012J the block casting number is OC356980R1 I could use a little advice on if these numbers are correct and what the correct rebuild kit would be. thanks in advance\
jack

Seems to me that that # should start with an L or F The J is a suffex for Rockford clutch or someting that was a option or specialty of the tractor like they had one for Gas, Kero Clutch, Lower or high Gears, get the pic. Your tractor should have came stock with 4" pistons unless the motor has been changed out and then it would say 281 instead of 264 on the block. In the last 50 years someone probly aded M&w kit or IH fire crators or something to the old girl. So its up to you weither you go back to 4" or stay with the 4 1/8. But just ask for a kit with the SM 500XXX check the block to make sure on the RH side that it is a 264 CI cause I dont think the 4" sleeves will fit if its a 281 CI block. And tell who ever that info also. JON

Jon I did check the RH side of the block, it did have a casting number of c264 on it. From what the previous owner said, they never touched the engine, the pistons did have what I believe were International Harvester pistons, did IH make the fire crater pistons? what was the difference between the fire crater and the stepped head pistons?
thanks for your time and trouble

Yes but was he the origanel owner of the tractor? Guy Fays book says that yes it should have came stock with 4" pistond maybe the newer models just before the 400 series may have came with the 4 1/8 I am not completly sure on this . If they are domed pistons seems to me that split domes and IH logo on the top that they will be fire crators probly. I know when I took the head of my 53 SM there was no doubt that it had fire crators in it. I cant remember the exact looks in my mind. As far as fire crators go some times a step head piston has a step on one side that goes up and the M&W and fire crators have like two domes on one side with like a crator in the middle of them . I am sure one of these mechanics will correct me if I am way off here. I ahve not done only a few so cant really rember likesome of these guys that do it every day.But I dont know what you are planning on doing but my SM has been to 100s of pulls and places and won quite a few with the 4" pistons and a few other up grades.
