Smoking IH656D

How much smoke should be venting out of the crankcase on an IH 656D? Mine puffs little white smoke consistently, even when warm - don't know about hot because the weather hasn't been warm enough to work the tractor. Tractor starts good, wondering if this is normal or if I have some ring or other issues?

Thanks, Tip

Thanks guys for the input. I may have a ring problem because it is more of a steady puffing. The tractor has been sitting for a while, so I want to run it a little more before I get too excited.

I bought the tractor right, expecting to have to do a rebuild. Given how well the tractor is running now with just new glowplugs, I feel like I am playing with the house's money. I am going to adjust the valves and will check the injection pump timing and see how I come out.

I am no expert, but I have been told that the white smoke coming out of the vent is a general sign of engine health. If it is a steady drifting all is well. Very obvious, steady puffing means blowby in a cylinder. The blowby pressurizes the crankcase making the rythmic puffing. I hope this is not your situation.

R. John,

Good way to put it; it's kinda scary, that's for sure.

Mornin' Tip,

They've got to be able to breathe from that vent. A "little" white smoke out of the breather is plumb normal to my mind. If it is "foggin'" oil smoke, that's another matter.

Is it missing at all, or does it seem to run okay? Does it start right up as it should?

Thanks for the reply Allan. I bought it running poorly - the seller was using ether to start it. Based on this board's advice, I installed new glow plugs to replace the 6 bad ones and, while it takes a couple of minutes of preheat (2-3), she fires right up. She puts out a little white smoke and then settles in, no missing, although it won't idle smoothly as low as I think it should. The smoke coming out of the breather I would describe as light puffing - no foggin at all.

I also need to get the temp gauge working and then double check to make sure there is a thermostat in the tractor.

I have a 560 diesel that did the same thing with a fresh motor .after some fine tuning on the fuel pump it runs like a sewing machine. chech your pump timing and adjust the valves if needed.
