How long does it take to seat the rings after a complete overhaul? I've worked her for about 2 hours after getting it up to running temp(I don't have a plow for the H so I drug a log up and down the road). I still get some white smoke at start up....smells like oil. Is there something else I should be looking at...Thanks for the help.

PS...I re-torqued the head and re-set the valve lash after the work out.

Proper break in of a new engine will take over 100 hours. My H has about 150 hours since overhaul and has just recently stopped burning a little bit of oil.

If you have no plow or implement, road gear is good for break in. Some hills or just going from 1/2 to full throttle can be enough of a pull.

Dyno time or pulling would be great though. I pulled the snot out of mine after about 2 hours puttering around the yard, hooked up a disc and ran it hard for about 20 hours on the hourmeter...

Breakin with today's much better oil can take as much as 15-20 hrs or longer. I would worry if in a month of use it didn't stop. I don't know how much attention was paid to the valve stems to guide clearance, but it should be to spec. If the oil puffs only at startup, I would be focusing on the valve area. Prolonged idleing then full throttle can also indicate stem loosness. Perfect circle valve seals are cheap easy and not a tear down. they regulate oil flow nicely. Let it run in more befor deciding.

Tail,

From your description, it sounds like oil coming around the valve guides.
