My 1206 has always been a hard starter. It needs a sniff of ether almost all the time when starting even in warm weather. The engine doesn't use much oil and it is still a very powerful tractor. Others have said the same thing about these tractors. Even after overhauls I've heard that they are still hard starters. How do we make these things start better. Has anyone fixed one that starts in 40 or 50 degree weather without ether. It has about a gazillion hours on it so if it means doing some engine work on it I"ll do it. I"ve grown quite attached to it.

You didn't mention glow plugs. Are those all up to snuff and do you keep them on long enough? Just a thought.

Dar I would start with the injectors, be sure you drain the water before you pull the injectors, they set in a bras sleve that can come out with the injector and let the water in the cylinder. The other problem could be compression if you have bad valves or rings they will start hard. Having been a machanic when the 806 1206 were new I would have to say they were very good starting engines much below 40 degrees.

There alot of things that come into play here, You head pressure on the injection pump my be low at cranking speed , your injectors my not be cracking at the correct pressure, your valve mybe resesed in the head to far and the head needs rebuilt with new valve seats to get everything back to where it is suppose to be , you could have the top rings knocked out of the pistons from using either and that will affect the comp . , it could be time for and complete overhaul , pump timing could be out . Remember she ain't no spring chicken and has had the bag worked off her when she was new.

DAR,

Get a shop manual first. Pull your injectors out and have them tested. The manual will tell you break out pressure. Chances are if the tractor has a lot of hours on it, the injectors will break out to soon. This means they are starting to spray before the engine has built up maximum compression, thus resulting in hard starting. Of course, there is whole bunch of other things that can cause hard starting like a poor starter, bad battery cables, poor connections, a just plain tired engine with low compression, worn exhaust valve seats causing valves to recess to far into the head(resulting in low compression). Anyway the injectors are a good place to start.

If it has a lot of hours on it,and injectors have never been touched, you could have injectors that need rebuilt,
