I posted a picture last week sometime, of a short block of a 450 I was putting together, bout 95 hp,,,,, anyways, I got that 450 running yesterday. Found out how expencive a gear reduced starter can be to rebuild. It sheered the key in the starter drive rite off the bat. Looks like it was loose for a while. I fixed it with a new key, cut to fit. So it now turns over really good. Fires right up, dont sound like no M or 450 Ive ever heard before,,, it sounds,,,, well, wheres the 4-16 plow at DAD????? The hydralics seem to whine alot,, up under the dash, where the resivoir is, it is a fully loaded 450 now, has fast hitch, power steering, full on fluid, and the pump seems to be silent. Power steering is good at an idle, but gets harder to turn when the engine rpms are up bout 1/2 throttle. Oil is on the dipstick, above the add. HYTRAN, or just straight hyd fluid? which is best? I've been through the steering problem you are having! Check the flow diverter valve first. It is behind the gas tank. The regulator, flow diverter is built into one unit. The flow diverter is on the bottom and the valve can be pulled out and checked by removing left hood. Then remove the snap ring towards the bottom of the valve above where your steering hose leaves the valve. There is a spring in there pushing out so be carefull. That valve gets worn on both sides. You can't buy the valve or the regulator assembley anymore. So what I did was have a very good machinist make a new valve with the same diameter as what the center of my valve was. .8750 inch. This made my steering work no matter what RPM or the loader was doing. There is also a screen inside the regulator that could be plugged causing problems. under that screen is a tiny bleader hole that could be plugged also. Your gas tank has to come off to remove and clean the regulator. This is the cheap and easy fix if you can machine a valve.

Hey Chad S. I have a Fast Hitch 4-14 for my 450. Plow in heavy clay in 3rd T/A ahead. As for the fluid I use Hytran. I figure that is what the owners manual says to use so that is what I use. Oh yeah I rebuilt my 450 2 yrs ago and according to the pto dyno it is running about 60 hp. Well good luck and have fun.
