I have the IH shop manual that descibes removal and reinstalling the steering gear. In the precedure the manual says to use "tin sleeve" or "shim stock" when replacing the steering gear housing on the base, in order to avoid damaging a seal. Does anyone know what they are referring to?? Is there another method or material to use?

Also, what is the best way to measure RPM's when setting idle speeds, etc...do I need a special gage??

Thanks to all.

Thanks to you both, that makes sense.

Now another silly question, what is an rpm counter and how is it used?

Bill, An RPM counter is nothing more than a hand held device that that can give you accurate RPM readings for anything that goes round and round. All kidding aside, they usually have a rubber pointer on the end that can be inserted into a center drilled hole such as your PTO shaft while tractor is running. They also have interchangeable diameter rubber wheels that can be held against known diameters to give RPM raediongs also. Allways use caution while doing these tests as you know the dangers of a rotating PTO shaft. I would recommend a helper be present.

Bill: Not just sure I follow that shim stock recomendation either. There was a change in SA internal steering parts midway through production. I have never had one of the early ones apart, but understand the vertical shaft is a square taper at bottom end where steering control arm goes on. My tarctor is the newer version with round tapered shaft with woodruff key for steering control arm.

I can only assume they are suggesting putting that shim stock around shaft so square cornered shaft or woodruff key don't damage seal in steering box base as you slide it up in position. That must be the concern.

On those old tractors if you want to be precise with idle settings, get an rpm counter and do it from pto rpm 540 pto should give engine 1525 on SA, and high idle as well. You can calculate the rest from that.

Mornin Hugh, I was thinkin the same thing. When I rebuilt the steering box on the Super A I had the tapered shaft on the bottom of the box, and other than the woodruff keyway, I dont see were you could damage the bottom seal! I just used some gear lube before assembly and didnt have any problem putting it together.
