Farmall 300 Questions

Couple of questions about my 300 Farmall.

I hear people say you should shut off the gas at the carb when you turn off the tractor. I grew up with an M, MTA and a 300U and we never turned off the gas and never had a problem that I was aware of. Should it be shut off and why?

Also my hydraulics is not lifting again with a load on it. Couple years ago, I requested help from you guys and finally just ended up taking it to the shop. Turned out I had a o-ring from one of the valves lodged in a valve keeping it from sealing. Don't use the tractor much so can't believe that happened again. Started raining so I put the tractor up, could low fluid level be the culprit? Next step, if isn't fluid level, is to check the cylinder, I guess.

TIA for any help.

make sure both the big filter in resevoir and the little screen in the regulator are clear. the liitle one is where most of the problems start---broke or pluged.

We always shutoff the gas at the carburetor. A full tank of gas weighs a good bit and the only thing holding that gas from draining out on the ground is the float needle valve. Any rust or dirt can keep this from closing. When the float
raises it will shut off the gas into the carb.
Any leakage around that needle valve the fuel will
just keep running out. Any holes in that float that has been known to happen can cause the gas to drain too.

You should check that hydraulic oil level and install a gauge to check the pressure. You may have lost another o-ring. Hal

PS: A gas leak could be fire hazard.
