M transmission pilot bearing keeps failing

I am having trouble with the little pilot bearing in my M transmission. This is the small bearing that bolts onto the end of the main transmission shaft, the one that the gears move on when you shift. It runs inside the tranmission drive shaft that comes in from the engine. I replaced the bearing about 2 years ago, after it failed, and now it has done the same thing again.

This is a standard M tractor, nothing special added to the transmission. Is this a problem area on M tractors? I use this M for quite alot of discing on 160 acres. I very much appreciate any insight that anyone has to offer on this problem!

My 1941 H, with the same idea of trans., had the pilot bearing going out in about a weeks time. I didn't notice until splitting it three times that the main drive gear had a severely wore surface that the bearing rides in. I just took the gear out, had it ground to a size bigger, and had a larger bearing put in. It was a quick and cheap fix (new gear $250) but it may not hold up to tractor pulling. So check the inside of the main gear that the pilot bearing rides in, and maybe the shims on the other end of the shaft by the diff.

I would make sure that the seat it rides in is smooth and make sure you have enough oil in the tranny. Doesnt that get lubed with splash or oil level?

There is a reason for the failure and janicholson lists many for you to check out. I do not believe this is a common problem for the M. This bearing runs whenever the clutch is engaged, except in 5th gear which is direct. This bearing should only have slight side loading on it from pressure generated by the gears meshing, and if I remember right, should be lubricated through a small hole in the input shaft. Possilby this is plugged, starving the bearing for lubrication.

Good luck!

My three decades of dealing with these bearings (and other pilot systems) is that alignment has the biggest effect, followed by compression loading (axial load forcing the parts down the shaft). The last item is lubrication loss from heat, or none from oil source as designed. Look at the failure to see what the dammage is. if the coupling system is dammaged there could be wildly excessive load in this area. Just some ideas.
