I was wondering if someone has seen some good V-8 swaps into an M. Not the cut and paste and throw one in, but a clean installation. I"d like to build one sometime and was wondering if anyone could point me the right way. I"ve seen a few good ones, but I"ve also seen some not so hot. I might even buy one if a guy is ready to sell. Thanks

A few years back at the Farm Progress SHow outside Alleman IA, I saw one with an IH V-8 truck engine in it. VERY nice, and had IH decals, valve covers etc...

I guess you will have to pick which type of engine you want in the M bellhousing. Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, I ve seen lots of them. The chevy is pretty easy to do, just take the rear engine plate from the M, and find the center line for the drive shaft, drill the transmission mounting pattern in the M back plate. Use a chevy clutch and flywheel, and make your own throw out bearing that works for the chevy pressure plate. On the drive shaft, you can cut the M shaft in 2, and get the shaft from the 4 speed chevy tranny, cut both to length, and make an adapter coupler to fit the 2 halfs together. Starters,,, well you can use a transmission mounted starter, like the old powerglide trannys used, and it bolts on to the M's engine plate with 3 bolts. If the frame rails are in the way,, either notch them out, or use ones from a bigger series IH, like a 560, or from the 56 series tractors. They will bolt on to the M bellhousing. Chevys had a few different diameters of flywheels, so did ford, so where space is critical, look for the smaller diameter flywheels. it may help you utilize the space needed to mount a stock chevy, or ford starter to your V8 swap. My persoanla preference for engines would be MOPAR, lots of torque, fords #2 choice, Chevys # 3. Hope this helps,, ChadS

I have quite a few pictures of 5000-7000 lb Modified M Farmall pullers from the late 60's-mid 70's.Probably half of the modified class used M's back then and most werent all butchered up.There sure used to be a bunch of them in Iowa. One of the best looking ones was "The Magnificent M" owned by Keith Peary from Cambridge,Iowa. It had a 454 Chev with 2-4's and cranked a bunch of rpms.

Years ago (abt 1972) I was a tool dealer, and one of my stops was a repair shop owned by two brothers, and they were good. They had an M with a For V-8 in it, and it was a nice neat installation. They just used it for parades, etc. They also had a WD allis which they installed an IGH 2000 (I think) loader on the rear, turned the ring gear around, and built a control station that was neat. Had hydraulic steering, etc. They had to reinforce the arms on the loader, with all the traction they got with it on the rear. great little rig. They also had an army surplus winch (big feller) which they had mounted on a trailer frame, and ran off the tractor pto. Had it hooked to a 400 I think. They had outriggers on the back of the cart to hold it in place when pulling. Said they had it ona 4 wheel drive that was stuck and didn't know it it would come out or not. They just started the pto and walked away till it sucked out of the mud. Weren't going to be anywhere around if the cable broke!

I've seen at least one good installation, looked like it could have been made that way. Don't know any details. Right now I have a 46 H with a stuck engine, and a 68 Ford truck with a good 360, and those two have been sorta eyeballing each other.
