The WOODS 72 will make a great mower. Just remember these are lawnmowers and not bush hogs. The 140 will have more than enough power for a 72. What ever brand you get make sure it runs off the belt pulley and not the PTO as the fender is in the way for the large pulley. Last price i seen on a 72 for a tractor like the 140 was around 2100 list.

Gene,
The only output I have is the straight 6 spline PTO. I have seen other 140's with a 90 degree output shaft as well as the standard PTO. Is this what you are talking about?
I recently saw a 140 with a fast hitch that had a RM59 mounted on the rear. I had considered using the 3 point RM59 I have as well as a belly mower to increase my mowing width. So, 2 questions. Do I need the 90 degree output gearbox? And, were do I get one? I have not seen any for sale and only about 1% of the 140's I have seen have them.

The plate with the serial# will tell you engine rpm# then at this rpm the pto would be 540. What are you running with the pto that you are concerned about the 540 rpm. Hardly any pto imps were so sensitive to maintain the 540rpm. Spraying with a pto pump would be the only one that could be critical due to rpm so as to get gpm flow.

Gene,
I am planning to run a belly mower if I can find one. Anybody got a 60" or 72" woods mower?

Don't want to be a smart A$$, but I know inquiring minds want to know. We have 2 later farmall 140s, and in the specs of the manual, the PTO rpm at full throttle is 541, so 1 too many per a minute :(. That is if your governer is still working ok. About the mower, a cheaper option if you don't care much about looks would be a sicklebar mower, sounds kind of stupid, but they are cheaper and cut clean. We had one for our 140s that we gave away for free so one of my friends could fit it onto his cub, learned the holes aren't quite the same ;), so be careful when choosing a mounting plate. If you are anywhere near central Ky, try Giles Farm equipment, they have a lot of used mowers like that normally and they are very reasonable. If you need their phone, let me know and I can hook you up with that

Hurst,
I appreciate your answer. I had considered a bar mower and still might. The last one I had was a JD#9 and it gave me nothing but grief! I sold it with the farm because I did not want it around. I have several places that I will not be able to drive the 140 since I am concerned with tip over. Will a cyclebar mower cut up a bank?
I am in central KY. Stanford to be exact. I am somewhat familiar with Giles, but have never been there. Aren't they in Georgetown? I will give them a call to see what they have.

Not to be a smart a** either, but he spec in '57 actually gave the speed as 536 plus or minus 10 rpm. The 1/58 revision said 540 plus or minus 10 rpm, under load.

I have seen them at farm auctions, and also they can still be purchased new probably right from your local equipment dealer. I would just recommend getting one that at leasst covers the wheel spacing on your tractor, which it sounds like you are. Good Luck.

Dion: The belly mower is quite flexable. I run mine anywhere from fast idle to full throttle depending on conditions. As gene said very few ag implenents need to be that exact. Don't worry about getting over speed with any transmission driven PTO, IH tractor. Prior to 1958 full throttle was 540 on all IH tractors or very close. 140 was that way until end of production.
