Wanting to Convert M to Have Live PTO

Was wondering if I could convert my M to a live PTO. I have bought a SMTA parts tractor and I understand they had a live PTO. If it can be done, what would be the procedure for switching or changing some SMTA parts to give my M a live PTO? Thanks

Patrick: If you do as your suggesting, put the IPTO in your M, every part from the clutch housing back, except wheels, seat and drawbar, must come from the MTA.

Patrick: Sell what you have. If you buy a 400 or 450, you will have money left over, 560 will take all the money and 656 you will need up to $2,000 along with your sales money. Now if you try what you propose, you will spend $2,000. anyhow, maybe more.

Pat,im going to guess the mta engine is not in running shape. If you just want to fix up a handy tractor to use it not much of a problem if mta is good from clutch housing back.Just install the M engine, first put the mta clutch and flywheel on.
another problem to have hydrualics the mta pump needs put on M engine.Unless its a later M engine the front cover will need changed for direct bolt up.If M carb. is used choke rod will need little modifacation. If you want to use M hood put the M front bolster and steer shaft on also use lower radiator pipe from M.rear steer shaft needs to be mta.M starter won't bolt to mta.other small thing you can figure out.

If your M is any good at all you can sell it and trade up to a 560 or 656 for very little cash outlay

When you are done with your M, you might want to consider putting a Panhead motor in a Schwinn.

It doesn't matter how bad the SMTA is. When you are done with your project, you will find that you own a SMTA with a M engine and grill. Wouldn't you rather have a SMTA that was all SMTA?

Anything can be done with enough time and money but think that owuld be a major job. Probably would be easier to find an M&W hand clutch setup as I understand that will give you live PTO. SMTA has separate drive off of the pressure plate for the PTO shaft, the clutch on the back makes it so you can turn if off and on independently. I would think it would be easier to fix up the SMTA or try to find a 350 or 400 with live pto.
