436 IH ENGINE PROBLEM

The camshaft in my 1466 went flat on two lobes.I have been told this happens a lot. My question is why, and is there a fix? Its got the wide lobe cam. and all the up dated oilers on the rockerarm shaft suports. Did IH do something different on the later engines to prevent this from happening? WHATS UP WITH THIS?

The tractor vet is right about Ford and Chevrolet
losing cam lobes. The first Ford with overhead
valves in 1954 had this problem before the cars had 12000 miles on them.

I would replace those cam bearings too, since your're replacing the cam. Hal

Yes you can fix this problem. Order 3 of 1802461C3 and install them on your rocker arm assy on #2 #4 #5. They will spray oil straight down on the can and stop this problem. Have installed them on every 400 series engine we work on.

A mechanic also told me the last ser.# blocks had 1 1/8inch diamater lifters, that offset to one side of the cam. lobe so the lifter will turn. The 1 inch older ones are centered over the lobe. Is there anything to this?

It is just one of them things , look at all the cheve's that ate cams , cummins small cams would fail even seen them on ford oliver john deere it does not matter loose tappet a cam fallower sezze up one part harder then the other a pice of dirt or metal chops one and not changing the oil or the wrong oil heck there is alot of reasons that could cause it . My 1486 had a bad cam because now get this someone put the valve cover on backwardsand it took out #5 cly lobes you culd see the ware on the valve cover from the rocker arms . For all the years that i have been twisten nuts and bolts nothing suprises me anymore. They have new aftermarket cams for you and the lifters . Now i would advise that you put new cam bearing in when you install the new cam , yea i know it is a bunch of work getting the engine out but you won't have to do it again . When i installed mine i was tryen to cheet and just pulled the head and ft. off well that went well BUT when i got it all back together guess what i lost oil pressure so i had to pull it back down and replace the cam bearings so i had to do the job twice and i don't like that . I went with the new high lift cam and changed the valve cover and breather to the B seires engine .

Elegant solution is roller followers. Adjusting the valve lash to solve lobe wear is a stretch. If it is too loose, you could increase roller impact with the lobe face, but again I believe it is unlikely. Too tight, would increase contact force at maximum lift, but you would burn a valve before you would effect lobe life. Two potential causes are excessive engine speed and poor oil. Is your HI set too high? What kind of oil do you use and how often do you change it? The local dealer cautions against using 15W40 oil in these engines. Claims, IH sent a bulletin which said excessive cam lobe could occur with this oil. In my opinion if this engine is that sensitive, then maybe I should have a different make engine. Consequently I use it anyway, and just change it more often. If any cam fails, I will get rid of all my IH stuff and buy something better. It is possible the OEM missed the heat treat on these lobes or overall had poor metallurgy. You could perform a hardness check, and also could do on the new cam. Just don't do it on the new cam lobe face! If hardness is not uniform, get another cam. Once a lobe starts to wear/fail from let's say surface pitting, the end is inevitable.

When I overhauled my 966 (converted it to a 436) the mechanic at the dealership told me to adjust the valves after 100 hours and that this was very critical in preventing a flat camshaft. Adjusting every 500 hours thereafter was also suggested as a preventative.

Aw heck Stoney,

Camshafts have been going flat since the invention of the internal combustion engine.

You just see it more in diesels because they run so darned long.
