We've got a farmall 656 gas gear drive that is in bad need of an engine overhaul. I want to do most of the work myself but have a few questions:

1. My dad put piston rings in the motor several years ago and said the motor has no cylinder sleves but the local dealer thinks it probably does. My brother thinks maybe the serial number (which is 23259 S) would help help determine if it has sleves.

2. Is the I&T service manual useful in doing a rebuild. I'm thinking of specs needed like the main bearings or piston ring gap etc.

3. Are there any rebuild kits to stay away from or are they all about the same.

Hello, The 656 gas was 263 cu in. engine that definatly has sleeves. They are not hard to get out. I used a 5/8" all thread and made a puller with the right size heavy washer. The serial # will be a plus as there were at least two different piston shapes and they won't interchange. I used a Clevite kit in mine. All US made parts and it worked well. The IT shop manual was all I had and it was enough. Good luck, YC

A 263 combine engine has no sleeves, direct bore. So if someone in the past swapped in a combine engine it is possable that it has no sleeves.
