Just bought a 1949 W6. It had no battery in it when I picked it up and cables are in rough shape. Is it Pos or Neg ground?

Thx

If you have an OEM type regulator and it says 6 volt positive ground, I believe on the underside, if you hook it up negative ground the regulator will go bad sooner than if positive ground -- because the contacts are not made of the same type metal.

I would say it depends on which side of the coil your hot wire goes to. I am trying to remember... positive ground the hot wire should go to the "-" side of the coil. Negative ground the hot wire should go to the "+" side of the coil. Someone will correct me if I am wrong on the wiring but I do know that the coil is wired different depending on what ground you use. Then polarize the generator.

Factory configuration was positive ground for W-6

That's what I tought too. Cables, what's left of them seem to hooked up as neg ground. This tractor, or so I'm told, had the starter and charging system added later and it still has a mag. If the ground is reversed, the starter will not work, correct?

If the ground is reversed, the starter will work, CORRECT.

The regulator would need to be polarized, but the starter is stupid and could care less.

It isn't the regulator that gets polarized, it is the generator. Regulator only works on either pos or neg grnd, whichever it was made for, but generator will work either way.

It seems as though a DC motor would reverse when you reverse the polarity. But the starter motors are very sophisticated.

If you've got 6v generator go ahead and hook the battery up positive ground. It works fine.

If you want to put a 12v alternator on, you'll need negative ground.

Series wound DC motors spin in only one direction (unless they have brush switching stuff, and starters do not) The electricity makes north magnetic poles in in the armature in opposition to the south poles of the field, or south poles in the armature in opposition to norths in the field.
