I have a W-9 I want to put a Delco alternator on. There is a second grove on the crankshaft pulley to drive it. Its on the engine side so the belt to the water pump needs to come off first. I noticed there is no belt tensioner on the water pump belt. The belt is only looped around the water pump pulley and the crank pulley. How do you guys change these? Do you roll it off or must one take off the water pump to instal the new belt??

If it works the same as the one on our W6, then there should be a set screw on the fan pulley. Use a lot of penetrating lubricant to get it loose. Take it out and then the one face of the pulley should be able to rotate on the threads cut into the fan base. As you rotate it it will spread the faces, making the belt run lower in the groove until you can slip the belt off of the bottom pulley. On ours, the set screw was rusted in and the moveable face of the pulley was seized up. We sprayed it up with penetrating oil and tapped on it with a hammer. Just make sure it doesn't break, it costs a lot. If that isn't the way it works, I am sure someone else will correct me soon. Hope it helped.

That is the way it works. I find that it even works surprisingly well for the kind of goofy, convoluted system it is. Every time I have had to do one, I think it will be an awful job, but it's usually not as bad as I thought. Good luck.
