I have been told introduction of the live hydraulics was at about number 19,000. I have 16,XXX and it has all the right stuff including the grill with blanks for the extra implement bracket bolts. Cast dates are 7 and 8 of year Y except the resevoir with a 6-Z code. Any thoughts on this? Could it have been in factory inventory then updated? or a dealer built stage 2?

Your tractor was probably built Jan 6th, 1954. It's approx. 100 ahead of Mine and it was built 1-7-54.

Interesting,if you have the stage 2 center tube
starter will be to left side of tractor.Starter would be in way of mounting resevior in factory
mounting spot if you have stage 1 center tube.So if center tube is changed to stage 2 why would they remove tag from it to put an early serial # on if it was from a parts tractor.Or was it changed long ago when there was'nt any parts tractors????? If you have a stage 2 fuel tank the
fuel outlet will be farther to rear.

Dennis - The transition to Stage 2 was at s/n 19234. However both scenarios you propose for yours (factory inventory upgrade or a dealer conversion) make sense.

Another Stage 1/Stage 2 spotting feature, presuming there’s no belly pump: Remove clutch housing cover from the underside of the torque tube (the casting that would be the belly pump housing if the tractor had a belly pump) and peek up inside.

If on the front of the transmission there’s a countershaft extension poking thru the countershaft bearing retainer (provided to drive a belly pump) the transmission was built as a Stage 1. However if you find a blind bearing retainer cap there it’s a Stage 2.

Serial was 19234. The June 1954 cast date on the reservoir is the key, so you answered your own question. There are other minor changes on the stage 2, perhaps someone else can tell you what they are and you can take it from there. There is some question as to exactly when that grille came out. I have a stage 2, but have never seen a stage 1 up close, only the regular H.

I've seen Stage I's with just the Stg II grill, and Stg I's with the 300 bolster but not the grill. But every Stg II I've ever seen has both the grill & bolster plus the live hyd. and battery box seat. I think it's all a situation of salvage yard parts to try to create the more desirable Stg II's.

Dr Evil, I have a Stage I Super H, SN 18559 with the grille with the two large holes and a front bolster with built in cultivator brackets. The casting date on the front bolster is 10-6-Y. The rest of the casting dates run from 6-22-Y to 11-7-Y. I think that tractors made during the transition from Stage I to II used parts that were available, some Stage I, some Stage II if the factory ran out of stage I parts.

I was at a sale the other day and there was a Stage 1 on that sale and it had a grill like the stage 2 but the holes were not cut in to the grill, more like a H and the frt.bolster was like the H.

The tractor in question has been together this way for a long time judging by the accumulated dirt, grease and overall patina. It all looks the same as if that way forever. I suspect my original observations are correct and am going to check that trans shaft.
