No. 1 thru 4 are rather smooth shifts-especially 1 to2 and 3 to4 or vice verse. From L to H is a stop & back off on the throttle shift. However the 826 is the slickest tranny I ever saw for shuttle shift. Say leave it in 2nd & rolling forward in H as smoothly as you stop, you can slip it into R and be backing up & as slick as slipping a spoon thru a milkshake , you can slip it from R to H and be rolling forward again . I can load 8 round bales on the trailer no muss no fuss smooth as silk with the 826 . Have two Deeres-one with syncro ,one with quad-ok, but just not nearly as slick as the Int.

There is no reason to double clutch the IH gear drive trans other than to wear out the release bearing faster..... ..

Lasse: Don't think you are going to do a whole lot of shifting on the go with that transmission. I know there are guys will tell you it can be don't but they only get it right once in ten tries.

I always found these big Farmalls would start away in number 8 low on TA with just about anything they will haul on a roadway, thus the only quick shift you need make can be done with TA. In the field and my tractor was a 1066, I've found myself putting tractor in 3rd or 4th and 16 hours later it had never been shifted. Yes go all day and never shift anything but forward-reverse and TA

Now if your just wanting a road tractor, there are better tractors. The big Farmalls were designed for field work. Many of them never left the field until the job was done, be it 4 hours or a week. In the 1960s, 70s and 80s Farmall was noted for its torque, they didn't need sophisticated transmissions. The other guys all did as no one held a candle to IH on torque.

It's kind of a shame, but public demand for smooth shifting tractors destroyed the very best field work tractor ever built. I will include all tractors right up to 2005, in that statment. I have driven a few of the new ones, and believe me, with out power shift they would be usless.

Hugh you are right in as much as the engine in that vintage of IH tractor was better than anything the competition had. Those tractors were excellent field tractors with alot of torque. No one is a bigger fan of the 414, 436, 466 engines than I am. When the magnum tractors came out with a CDC engine I was disapointed, until I drove one. The 505 engine will develop more power, more torque rise and use less fuel than the IH engines. The powershift just makes it more efficent. The 66 series tractors were as good as it got in 1971 but that was 34 years ago.
