Hey now,

She is alive and man, what a nice sound. My friend and I got that new starter in, two hot dog batteries and hit the starter, NOTHING. What, how, why ? Well, good power to the starter button, good power leaving but somehow the power does not get to the starter. No problem, bypass and she fired up quicker that you read about. Man, fired right up, sounds great, took her for a spin and let her idle while we had a few beers. We then took the sheet metal off the hood, took the chrome (NICE) stack off and got her into the shop for love and care, fluids and filter change and a going through. I was real happy to hear her run and if you don't thinks that is cool then grits ain't groceries.

Side Note: Sarge, Allen told me about steelwheelranch (785)548-7437, they have the batteries covers. Also, Little Red Tractor at 402-986-1352, nice guy, Glen, he might have it also.

Will keep you all posted. See ya for now. Smilin' in Mass.

Allen,

You think that is it, the nuetral safety ? I had the machine in nuetral and the clutch in, is that what you think ? I was ready to run another wire. Guess I jump into stuff without thinking but then again, safety is not bad idea. I have power to the button, power from the button, but no power when the button is pushed to the starter. Where is the switch ? Let me know. Thanks

John,

If the thing is still plugged in, unplug it and try jumpering the connector; if still no go, you have a bad push button.

Don't ask me why, the things come unplugged.

Allen,

With a test light I had live power into the button, no power out. When the button was pushed, I had good power out of the button, no power to the starter. I thought the wire was broke so we just put hot power to the start fromt hepositive on the battery. Now that you and Sloroll have shed light on the safety end of things, I guess that might be. I will have to follow the wire or look at the schematic in the parts manual. You guys have to be right, I was a bit wondering how a wire could break but like you said, you know !

Yes Sir,

Talk to anybody who works on 'em all the time.

Darned Neutral Safety switch about 80% of the time and believe it or not, more so on the 1066s. Just one of those oddities of our old reds.

Mine ocasionally will do the same thing due to the switch. I run it in and out of a gear just to make sure it is in neutral and then if the clutch is all the way down, it will always turn over. Sometimes that switch and you will have different ideas where neutral is.

Sloroll,

I will play with that in the AM when I feed. I can see that being the case, like Allen said and you also. I will push the button an dmove the shifter and hsee if she kicks. I fnot, man I can fix that safety thing real quick. It is funny, I started looking at my 584 like it was amll today, go figure ?

John,

Sure don't think there is a "Neutral" thing as far as the gearshift goes. The switch is down under the operator's platform at the clutch arm.

This is the one on my 686; 966 is kinda similar.

Man, good shot Allen. I will check this out. I did have the clutch in but those little switches can get out of wack. I hate the safety stuff but it is needed. Have a friend whos Grandpa got runover by jumping one with the screw driver to the starter business and the rear tire come over him. BAD. He was 80, good life but still. Disc put him in the ground.

John,

If you have juice coming out of the push button, I'll almost bet you that nice tractor that there's a difficulity at the N/S.

It is sooooo tempting to just 'jumper' the connector and leave 'er hot. Please don't do that; we don't wanna read about you one day in the paper.

Man Allen I swear I used to have to move that shifter about. I was a lot younger than of course and maybe I didn't have my weight on the clutch.

Well,

I sure won't bet my wife's pet pig on it, but I'm pretty darned sure that the clutch switch is the only safety device.

It lives above and kinda forward of the left brake housing.

But, you know how I am; if I'm not wrong 'bout 100 times a day, something is wrong. It's gettin' late and this might very well be # 100. :>)
