M sector gear -- what's up with this?

I pulled the sector and worm gears today on our 1951 Farmall M. The job went itself went smoothly, but I've now run into an unexpected problem: the old sector gear is different from the "new" one we picked up in a tractor graveyard.

The old gear is on the left:

As you can see, our new gear is "half" of what the old one was. Why is this? Is the new one broken or something?

Any tips for installing the new one? I assume you want things lined up so that straight wheels have the gear right at mid-point..

i've never seen a full steering gear worn out. you have six different settings for it. the only place the teeth would be worn is in the straight ahead position. the sector gear that you got from a used tractor is most certainly worn more than your old 'full' gear.

Not to worry Bill,

The goofy thing only uses that much of the gear anyway. If your old gear had never been changed, you could have just "flipped" it 180 degrees and used the unused part.

Yep, plunk 'er in there with the wheels pointed straight ahead and your new gear at it's centerpoint.

Then, take 'er out and turn some square corners. :>)

How about this? If the high headed bolt wasn't in the lower bolster then with the old style gear you could turn the streering wheel roun&roun&roun and the wheels would go all the way around and around. I'm pretty sure of having been on one years ago that would do that. If you had the half moon gear and no high top bolt to hit the stop you could lose it altogether, right?

Boy! Ain't that the truth!

We always had to change the front ends under the H back and forth a number of times during the season for different jobs.

To this day, I consider that stop bolt to be like 'gold'. 'Twis the one item on the place that I always know just where it is located.

You just don't loose a stop bolt just as you don't run a diesel out of fuel! :>)

Bill - Both styles of gear can be considered "normal" (I have one of each in my two tractors...)

Installing the half moon style gear is just as you assume: Set the front wheels to point straight ahead then orient the gear on the spline so the worm is at the midpoint.

Are the teeth undamaged on the "back" side of your old gear? If so you can simply rotate it 180 deg on the pivot shaft so the worm will be working on the unworn, good teeth.

Thanks for the re-assurance, fellas. I was afraid for a moment that I had bought a broken piece of gear.

My goal in renovating the steering system is to hammer out all wobble at road speed. Right now we have it pretty bad, plus there's about 6 inches of play at the wheel. The new worm and sector should take care of the play.. Hopefully the wobble, too.

And thanks for the tip about rotating the full moon sector -- I'll keep it around just in case the new one is no better.

Bill - Before you stick the sector gear in, check for radial (horizontal) play at the top end of the pivot shaft. If you find ANY play at all, you should replace the upper pivot shaft bushing under the sector gear to take up the clearance. Otherwise even with a good worm and sector gear set installed, the front end is still liable to still wobble at speed.

And also check the lower bolster bearing.

Of all the wobbling M's I have fixed I never needed a worm gear or a sector gear.

Worm thrust bearings, upper bolster, lower bolster, and loose wheel bearings.

Save your old gear.
