Water Pump: Stripped Packing Nut

Started working on the water pump assembly. Discovered that the packing nut was loose. Upon closer examination, I discovered that not only is all the packing gone, but the packing nut is stripped bare and has rattled around in there for God knows how long (how could somebody have run that poor old gal like that for what must have been quite a long time? The thing must have leaked like a seive!).

So, has anybody ever encountered this before? Can a new packing nut be acquired / manufactured? The threads on the housing (where the packing nut inserts) are a little worn, but not gone, I think they could be cleaned up. I checked with the IH dealer and a remanufactured water pump is $466.00. I hadn't asked yet whether I could just get the packing nut. Anybody know?

Thanks,

Tony

I assume you are talking about and M or H. If so, I'm pretty sure you can buy just the packing nut the IH dealer you talked to should be able to get it or try Carter&Gruenwald.

A new nut could probably be made by a machinist if he had access to the proper material. I would suggest trying a salvage yard to see if you can find a pump that has a good one on it. Depending on what else you need to get your pump in useable shape, it might be the quickest/easiest place to look.

Thanks for the advice. What about the pumps sold on this site? I saw they had a new (?) water pump for H's running at $129.00. That's a far cry better than the $466.00 for the remanufactured one at the Case-IH dealer. I can actually afford $129.00. Anybody ever buy one off this site?

Tony

Not from this site, but I bought one from Steel Wheel Ranch -- made in China, or Taiwan, etc. Probably the same company. Replaced it because I couldn't the old one to stop leaking (used new IH packing). Can't get the new one to stop either. I think the Chinese one is metric, as to shaft size, etc. If you do buy it, put new packing in it, or it won't just drip, it will leak like a sieve.
