I never knew anything like this could happen.

I ran into a another farmer I have know for years late yesterday while at the filling station in town. He had his right hand all bandaged-up and I asked what had happened, then I noticed that he was missing his fore finger. He told me that he had gotten out of the hospital just the other day. He had been using his tractor loader to move and haul gravel. He noticed that there was some oil dripping from one of the hydraulic hoses on the loader. He ran his hand over it and he said that he felt a "sting". That night his finger really started hurting him. Went to the doctor the next day and he had to go to the hospital to have his finger amputated!

Apparently, the pressure in a modern tractor hydraulic system is so high that it can inject oil right through your skin without you even noticing it, no bleeding or anything!

Thanks. I can see a dummy like me running my hand along a hose looking for a leak. I better not.

Yep, and fuel injection systems pose the same danger. Guys who get injected are lucky if they just lose a finger, petrolium products can cause blood poisoning and kill you.

My Brother worked with a guy that had no fingers in his left hand due to a pin hole steam leak. The pressure was 1250 psi, but the temp was 1400 deg. F. It just cut off the fingers and cauterized the wound. Not good

I've seen heavy nylon fabric covers on some hydraulic lines. Are they there for both abrasion protection and to prevent this kind of thing? If a pinhole leak appears, the nylon takes the force of the blast?

We use a lot of hydraulics at work on our diecasting equipment. When a small pinhole leak like that forms, it is also a real fire hazard. The fine mist formed will readily ignite. Forget about the fact it's hydraulic oil that most people say is 'hard to burn' when it's a mist at high pressure, it's almost like gasoline fumes. The 'oil' that we use is actually a water base, to try to prevent fire, and it will still ignite at times.

Yep, it's true. The proper way to check for a leak is to pass a piece of cardboard over the suspected area and not your hand. Hell of a thing though, I feel for the guy.

Ya them hydraulics are dangerous. We had a 4-H farm saftey meeting at the Case IH dealer, one of there mechanics was there, he said he was on a service call, Something went wrong on a planter, he was checking the hydraulics and all of a sudden one of the lines burst, it did the same thing to his finger, he didn't see any blood, so he went home and never thought anything about it. Later that night he was feeling sick and his finger was killing him, he had to get his finger cut off at the first joint from the top. He said his little boy always asked when its going to grow back.

i was telling a mech friend of mine about a leak on my hydraulic and he warned me of the same thing. when looking at replacement oil down at tractor supply the other day i noticed a warning on the label that basically said the same thing. final line was "amputation may be necessary!"

i was looking at my manual last night and it said hydraulic pressure was 1595 lbs per sq in. a pin hole would still pack plenty of punch.
