Lights for Farmall M

My M didn't come with any lights. It has the 12 volt conversion and the light box itself is there and in really good shape, just no lights.

There are some lights on ebay but they seem pretty pricey to me. There is an auction right now that is at $76 for 2 lights and hasn't met the reserve yet. Is there anywhere else to look for lights or is $40+ each going to be the going rate?

Or do I even need to bother? I didn't think so but ended up out in the dark the other day trying to get the last little bit of weeds mowed in one spot. For those who have lights how often do you actually use them?

Thanks, Nathan

Keep an eye on ebay. Sometimes you can get a light bar with the lights. This way you have the bar, lights, and the needed clamps. Any salvage yards where you are at?

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies.

I'll go ahead and post a pic of my M! ;-)

I think my M is pretty but it definetly is going to be a working tractor more than a restoration project.

I guess there is no hurry so I will just keep my eyes open on ebay though. Thanks for explaining the difference between the flat back and the tear drop lights for me. The ones I had seen for $43.50 were the flat back kind.

I do have a few brackets of some kind on the steering column but not sure what they are for. I don't have the true light bar so I will be looking for that on ebay, there are a few on there right now.

I won't modify anything that would mess the tractor up but the $10 lights from walmart or the auto parts store might be a good option if I can mount them without having to modify anything.

Thanks again for the quick responses.

Nice lookin' old girl Nathan!

If you have the original light bar bracket and end clamps you can mount those rubber sealbeams with no modification whatsoever.

Punch below for a shot of rubber lights mounted on my SM.

Very nice looking tractor you have there!!

Those look fine to me. I have several other things on my tractor (like a 3 pt hitch) and rebuilt starter, etc. that are very functional but not original.

I think that those look better than the rusted out lights with broken lenses I'm seeing going on ebay for $20 or $30.

I'll keep looking for a while but am definetly leaning toward just picking up a couple of those. Need to get a decent lightbar and I'll be set.

Thanks, Nathan

Nathan - I use the lights frequently on all of my tractors. Most of my snow pushing is done after dark - good lighting is a necessity. And during the other 3 seasons I seem to occasionally get caught out as daylight fades. Hving good lights lets me avoid rushing to complete the job and therefore improves safety.

Also for conspicuity and safety, I ALWAYS use the lights whenever I have a tractor out on a public road.

If you are not concerned about originality, those rubber “tractor/utility” seal beams are hard to beat. They’re inexpensive ($15 or less), throw a lot more light than the OEM lamps, the bulbs are long-lasting, and bulb replacement is cheap and easily accomplished without tools.

Nathan, you can buy used lights from several places. JP Tractor Salvage 573-783-7055. Steel Wheel Ranch. New could be OEM Tractor Parts. These places have 800 numbers.

Nathan, As I remember seeing the pictures of your M that you posted your tractor is far to nice to "jerry rig" something on it. The "teardrop" style correct lights for your tractor are very common and can easily be found. Try the classifieds on this site and maybe put in a wanted ad and pick out the ones you want. They originally came with 6 volt bulbs so they will need the 12 volt bulb (no. 1156) which are available at any auto parts store for about $2/each. Give yourself a little time and watch eBay as those lights are always being listed. You will quickly determine what the normal selling price is. Check with the Nebraska Cowman who is a regular on this site as I'll bet he has them by the bucket full and is a great person for used parts. Make sure you get the "teardrop" style and not the flatback as they have sealed beams and are very expensive for new bulbs. I believe you were looking at the flatbacks and they didn't appear until the Super series which is later then your M. As far as the need for lights you will have to make that decision. They are certainly the thing to have if you need to drive on a public road for any reason. Doing field work after sunset, I doubt much of that occurs with these old tractors but again you are the judge. I know when we were working dirt as a kid when it was a real farm lights were used a lot if just getting to the house with the tractor after a long day in the fields. Picked up a lot of hay out of fields in the cool evenings as well. Hope this helps.

I didn't see the lights on e bay, I assume they are "original" for that price. I have a SMTA with lights but I got them from NAPA for about 9.95 each, they are just standard equipment lights and sell for about the same amount as the replacement bulb. I changed mine over to 12 volt also and that definitely makes it easier to find lights. I think it depends upon how you use it or if you want it to look original. I use mine on a baler and often that means night work. I have lights on the baler also. I have used this tractor clearing snow at times so the lights help there. Do you have the light bar? if not you could probably find one at a salvage yard.

Has anyone used lights like this?

How much work to modify the brackets to hold them?

If all you need is just some lights, then go with the generac or whatever. Might even find those locally at your farm store or auto parts. Should be easily adaptable.

I HAVE AN "M" AND A SM AND THE LIGHTS ON BOTH WERE IN PRETTY SAD SHAPE. I PICKED UP A PAIR AT WAL-MART, PAINTED THEM RED, INSTALLED THEM, AND YOU HAVE TO REALLY LOOK TO TELL THAT THEY AREN,T ORIGINAL. TOTAL COST? LESS THAN TWNTY BUCKS.
