I am looking for a belt pulley for my 1942 Farmall M and wondering which would have been factory. A paper or steel one?
Also, did the factory hood decals have IH in front of Farmall?
Thanks
Dan

I would have one on my H, but I'm a dunderhead and don't. The previous owner showed me the paper pulley when I first went to look at the tractor. Then, next trip, after we loaded it up he said,"Oh yeah, the belt pulley is back at the barn. I'll go get it."
Yours truely, letting excitement&impatience get over sense, says, "Don't bother, I won't be needing it."
I 'magine he's long since ebayed it, but if I could remember his name I'd call and ask.
Wm, the dunce

Thanks for the help.
I think I will go with a metal pulley because I haven't seen too many at the shows.

Dan, Both steel and paper pulleys were available, however most farmers prefered the paper pulley as when dressed it held the belt better than steel, which in turn caused the belt to track better. The hood decals on your 42 H would have had FARMALL and directly above had McCormick Deering. The IH logo didnt appear until after the war, which would have been 1945 and later. At that time the Deering name was removed also and only McCormick appeared over the FARMALL name.

The pulleys were optional. Most dealers ordered Paper because they hold the belt much better. In 1942 the decal read McCormick Deering Farmall, The later IH decals came in 1945. Maple Hunter has the correct ones.

Cowman: I presume you are suggesting Farmall on the Farmalls and McCormick Deering on the W series tractors. You are right, I stand corrected.

The reason I hesitated on steel pulley back in early 40s, is my dad bought the W4 new with paper pulley. In 51 he traded the W4 for a new H. At delivery of new H with steel pulley by IH dealer my dad said, " hold on now quite so fast, I had a paper pulley and will continue to have a paper pulley." So the pullies go switched right there in barn yard. I expect you may find a few early 40s tractors equiped with steel pullies that happened just that way.

No, you were not wrong Hugh. I think the question was about the decal on the side of the hood. I am sure the decal on the W series changed too but not too familier with them. this is row crop country.

I never saw a steel belt pulley on an IHC tractor. All I saw were either cast iron or paper. Many smaller AC tractors had steel and I had a CA with aluminum.

Dan: I expect either pulley would have been available. I know paper was as my dad bought a new W4 in 42 with paper pulley.

On the front emblem above the grill, all plain letter series had the word Farmall or in the case of W series International. The IH emblem came with Super Letter series tractors.
