I found a 424 at a local dealership - 1967 based on serial no., 2000 plus hours, gas, starts up well, no noise, brakes good, oil leaks here and there, lift and PTO appear to work but did not use with an implement, tires very poor, tin pretty dinged up everywhere, lights only in pieces, hydraulics still being checked out. Asking price was $4500 cash deal. Is this way over-priced? I'm in central Nebraska. Any input would be appreciated.

From what you describe it sounds like a 1500.00$ tractor. Maybe less. Beware of the 2 stage clutch on those critters also! Good luck, Andy

What do you mean by "beware or the two-stage clutch"?

I have a diesel 424 with the 2-stage clutch, which I've used heavily over the years with a rotary cutter.

The clutch has never given any trouble. Are you saying that there's a problem I should be aware of?

A 424 is nearly the same physical size as an "N" series Ford, and is much more modern, and has almost twice the HP. The old Fords often sell in the $1500.00 to $2500.00 range. Why do you figure a 424 is worth so little?

Bob, Didnt mean to get your dander up! I had a 2424 that if you didnt use the PTO very often the 2 clutch discs would rust togetherand would not work correctly. I would have to break it loose by using a bush hog. I have heard that this is a common occurance with the 2 stage. As far as comparing it to a Ford, it would run circles around one! THe 424 isnt as popular an the N series and arent as well known either, consequently they dont bring the $$. I gave 1500.00 for mine with good rubber and tin ran excellent, but the clutch was stuck also.
