my neighbor has a nice 470 IH disc for sale. it"s a 20 footer. will my 766 handle it? i"ve got plenty of weight and duals if needed. i know the basics of 1.5hp per blade but i didn"t get a chance to count the blades! not looking to spend a week on non-stop discing, just have about 30 acres every couple of years. i know it"s too big for the acreage but the price is right!

Casey,

I had a 21’ 475 that I pulled behind my 966, stock hp with 18.4 X 38 tires. In corn stalks it would pull it in low 4th fine, in plowed or chiseled ground I had to go to low 3rd and sometimes even use the TA in order to pull it.

If this is the tractor that you are going from 34 to 38 inch tires you will probably have a larger rolling radius on the 38 inch tires. This translates to higher ground speeds and less power in a given gear, but also should have more traction due to larger footprint. What I’m getting at, is that you may need to use a lower gear than you anticipate for pulling tillage equipment with the 38 inch tires.

As others have said, you can use the disk with the wings up (or take them off) if you can’t pull it. I think you will find you will have the power to pull the full width, but possibly not at the speed you would like to be moving at. Another option is to take blades off the wings and just put large washers (the same thickness as a blade) where you take the blades off the ends. If the deal is as sweet as you say, buy it. You have options if you can’t pull the whole disk.

Just pull it with the wings up, that"s what I did. Couldn"t beat the price on my disk, but my Oliver won"t pull the 22" when it"s all down, so I just run with it up (or you can just take them off and make some $ making it China fodder).

I,ve pulled a IH 470 with a 756 D10 turned up to 90 hp. Of course I was disking plowed ground pulling it in low 3rd with the TA ahead. The beatiful thing about the IH 470 is the depth adjustment on the disk. It will leave the ground level. Go ahead and by it. You have enough tractor.

Casey,

Rusty is right. Your 766 will not handle that disc properly. However, if you straighten out the angle a little perhaps you'll get by. I'm assuming that you just want to throw in some wheat or something?

I used a 18 foot spring loaded 'winger' with my 766 dualed up and it just worked the livin' snot out of it. Maybe if you get clear down in third gear, it might pull it, dunno.

But you can't pass up a good deal either. Go buy the disk; if it doesn't work out maybe you and I can work out a trade. I've got a 15 footer that would fit that 7 like a glove.

Yes, your big disc should be a hydraulic-fold wing model.

I am assuming that this is a wing disc? If so, you may be able to remove the wings, otherwise 20 feet is a bit much for a 766.

Ask of you can try it and see since it's a neighbor, but no, I seriously doubt a 766 would even come close to haveing enough power for that, especially if you have hills to use it on. I work for a man who has 12' heavy duty rock flex sunflower disk and pulls it with a 1466 4wd with no duals or weights and that will do power hops in certain spots and has enough problems pulling it, but power isn't an issue at all with that tractor. I don't know how much that 1466 weighs, but it must be a whole lot more than a 766, plus that 4wd front weighs in there, so basically I'll bet that will pull about as much or maybe alittle more than your 2wd 766 with duels and weights. Being a 20' set, it's gotta be an almost new disk (as I have yet to see an old disk that size) and I'll bet its a big heavy set at that, I'd say you need alot more horsepower and weight than you have.
