I just put my "new" Farmall H on the tractor resgistry. It is # FBH 290295, a 1948. It was in the 70s here on Saturday and I mowed about 5 acres with it after changing all the fluids. The oil bath cup had about 3/4 inch of some nasty stuff in it. The old girl sure does run well though. If someone has the form for the free gas caps I sure would appreitate that. I had a bunch of copys but we are in the middle of moveing and building and I couldn't find them. I think the old cap sloshed more gas out than the tractor burned. Another Item I will be needing is a shock for the seat. I hit a tire rut and hit bottom so hard that I bent the pto lever and broke the bracket with my big butt. Now that I have an H I see why all you on the board like them so much. A great old tractor arent they.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Farmall H.
Now you know why many people think it is the best Farmall ever built. Don't they just sound like heaven when they are workin? Did you post a picture yet? If not I hope you do soon.

I would think that a new shock with bushings, pivot pin, and spring would make you ride (and rest) alot easier. I got my stuff from Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch and could not be more pleased.

Enjoy that ol' girl and just hope you never have to replace the radiator as that is a huge pain especially on the wide front models.

see ya,

Brian

Like Gordon says, get a new spring for your seat. The old one has likely lost it's spring and is too weak to give proper support. Even with a new shock, if the spring is compressed all the way, you are still going to hit bottom.

Thanks for the replies on the spring and the shock. I'll get on that right away. I will post some photos as soon as I can get my computor to work with my camera again. I'll be a little slow on buying parts as I'm spending about $100 a week and gas right now and not buying all that much if you know what I mean.

Paul, The shock in your seat assembly was designed to "dampen" the bouncing of the spring. The SPRING was designed to hold the driver up and give him a little measure of flex. Once that spring is shot any shock will just compress to it's minimum, and stay there until it may have an opprtuninity to expand.I'd disassemble the seat assembly and check that spring out. It should be about 12 1/2 inches tall with no load. Then you can also check the shock. Local spring shop can rearch and heat treat the spring. Or you can shim the spring on each end to gain an inch, and pickup some coil spring spacers. The most frequent fatal accident on the H was failure of the seat, sending the operator to the ground in front of whatever he was pulling. Hope you weren't using a bush hog! I have #3053xx H

This is something that all of us need to do, and I mean every single one of us. I have all of mine recorded, but at the present time I don't even know where the list is. Might be a good job for today.

Here it is. My H also had the self-rinsing gas tank 'til I got a new one.

Thanks for the quick reply Williamf. I didn't think anyone else was up at this time of day.
