I'm sure many of you have heard of this particular scam, but I want everyone to be aware. I buy and sell tractor parts and the such on ebay from time to time. I placed a bid on a Farmall F12 not far from my neck of the woods. I put a max bid of $1500 but the tractor sold for $1900. The auction ended last week sometime.

Two days ago I was contacted by an unknown party stating the tractor was available to me for $1500. I sent an email to the actual buyer and the seller, and both parties stated the tractor was sold with no other offers. I sent an email to the unknown party asking why the tractor was for sale and they returned my email without an explaination. They want me to send my personal information and stated ebay will email me strict payment instructions that must be followed. The last sentence stated the shipping for the tractor was included in the price. I found that statement amusing. The kicker is I'm a full time law enforcement officer and restore these old tractors for a stress reliever. I will be personally investigating this case. I've got a feeling the person conducting the scam lives outside the country. I'm gonna be contacting one of my FBI buddies with some contact information if my hunch is right. If any of you have been contacted with this scam be aware and don't give them any of your information. This includes your name. I will get a contact number and share it with all of you in the near future. Once I find out where this email is coming from I will contact ebay. I will keep you all posted and feel free to share any experiences or thoughts on this issue.

Hey Sprout, I got one just like it last week on a tractor I too didn't win. There was some discrepency as to what the tractor actually was, so I emailed the winning bidder, and he was a farmer and we talked a couple of times, and then I got the second chance offer, emailed the farmer, he said he had already paid for the tractor, and I never got anything else on it, but the second chance offer did come through ebay. I know they are in the dark just as much as anybody else, cause they aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them, so somebody has come up with a different variation on the old shell game, huh. Let us know, and if any of us can help, just ask. Later, Harley

If you think this scam is limited to tractors and parts, think again. I was attempting to buy a used computer system for my wife a few weeks ago. I bid on several and when the bids were nearing the price of a new one, I stopped and moved on to another. Each time, I was contacted by the "seller" saying I had a second chance to buy the computer for my last high bid. It looked good until I contacted one of the sellers and he went vague on me with follow-up information.

My problem with following up on this scenario was that I became so skeptical of any contacts, with or from eBay, that I gave up on the process completely and bought a new one from a warehouse via phone.

These folks are setting at their computer 24 hours a day watching our moves and making contacts. If one of us in 100 falls for the scam it is a good payoff.

I had same thing on a JD300 hoe I missed by a couple hundred bucks. An E-Bay member with 1 transaction said he had one just like it and would sell for my bid off E-Bay. I researched his handle and found he was from France I replied and asked him if item was in France, but never got reply. Kinda fishy.

That same thing happened to me on a two thousand dollar otc vision premier engine analyzer two weeks ago, and the original seller was quite baffled when all us bidders thought we had a "second chance" at the item. He did the research and found it is a scam. Looks damn real though...Randy

You are correct and that is why people will still be getting scammed forever in the future. However, for the time being whats happened has happened. Once you put something on the internet you can no longer delete it. That's what is nice about the internet. It can be easy to track someone and prosecute because of the great amount of evidence available. We can talk about this all we want and it will not change the outcome. Remember they want to fraud you and don't like it when you are educated on the scheme.

These people are constantly changing their tactics. I think it is important to be aware and not let these individuals take advantage of others. Make no mistake, most of these people are quite intelligent. I believe in trying to stay one step ahead of them, not them one step ahead of me.

This is strictly my opinion and mine alone. I respect everyone's opinion and hold everyone on this forum in the highest regards. I posted this information because I like the friendships on this forum and don't want to see anyone hurt. I think we all work hard for our money. I believe everyone is right and no wrong answers or opinions exsist.

Sprout, I agree with you 100%. While my response had some tongue in cheek elements to it, the intended message is that we have to be one step ahead of the scammers. If they are going to continue in business, at least we can make it more difficult. Its like antibiotics, they only solve todays problem. There will be a while new set of circumstances tomorrow, and we have to be ever vigilant.

Ignoring scammers by simply deleting the message does not stop them. It only leaves more trusting people vulnerable. If we give a darn about our friends and neighbours it is our responsibility to try and put a stop to it.
Keep up the good work

Hi Sprout. I want to thank you for your concern and effort to help eliminate these scammers. I don"t understand why some folks tend to scold someone for being friendly and helpfull. I have often wondered if anyone was looking into this matter and just how to go about it. Go get um and good luck.....Thanks

You guys are probably right, that sort of thing just aggravates me. I feel if I ignore it then in some sort of way I condone it. I agree about the 5%, and lord knows you can’t help all of them even though it would be nice.

I for one am also glad that you aren't the sort of person to just ignore it. I also realize that if every one of these were reported to the police, they would be swamped. But, at the same time, whenever I hear about phone scams and the like, it always seems to be a majority of 'older' folks who seem to be affected. I hate hearing about this sort of thing, because I know the reason that they are the ones targeted is because of the fact they are so trusting, be cuase of the values learned when they were young. It's a shame when in todays society no-one wants to or can trust people....no-one wants to help their fellow man (or woman).....

I happen to live near a major highway, a portion of it is visible from the house. Quite often I will see a car stopped with some sort of problem or another. I always try to go and see what I can do to help. I get reactions anywhere from great, thanks for the help, to closed/locked doors and windows. For the most part, it's just a matter of asking if they have a cell phone and if they have help on the way. I had one poor woman (2am on my way home from work) who would barely open the window enough to talk. I told her that I just wanted to know if she had a cellphone, and if help was on the way, otherwise I would call someone, or the police for her. Pointed out the lights on the house, told her that was where I lived. She asked me to call 911 and ask an officer be dispatched. An hour or so later a car pulled in the driveway, it was her and her husband. They got out, thanked me for calling, she had been sitting there over an hour and no-one had stopped, and she had didn't have a cellphone (forgot it or something I think). She also said she had been robbed years ago, and had been terrified to open the door or anything when I stopped. I told her that she had done the right thing, not to be sorry, and that I was just glad to help. Told her that if it ever happened again, to do the same thing again, that likely the 'good samaritan' would be just that, but you never know, especially when women are involved.

Sprout, keep after these scammers, and keep up the good work as an officer of the law. I'm sure the reason that you became an officer more than anything else was to help people.....and there are people out there that need it, either directly, as in my case, or indirectly, like trying to put a stop to scams such as the one that you are investigating.

Mark

Sprout: I quite agree with Cowman, delete button should have taken about 2 seconds. Then you couple that with putting it out on internet. Not very good detective work.

I have a little story for all you guys that get on here shouting SCAM, SCAM, SCAM. My grand father had a sow hog with a 8 piglet litter. The young were about 5 weeks old. He went to barn for feeding one morning and discovered two little piglets missing. Two days later my grand mother said," George, I thought the sow had 8 little pigs and now there are only 6." To which my grand father responded, " she did but she laid on and crushed two of them." He said at time he didn't think she would buy that as 5 week old piglets are just too fast and can get out of way. But she apparently did. He raised the remaining 6 and by fall they were ready for market. One day a neighbor dropped in, he and my grand father were in the hog barn discussing other matters when neighbor discovered the market hogs. Told granddad what a fine pen of hogs he had. As he was leaving he asked," Say George, did you ever find out who stole your two little pigs." "Never until now", responded my grand father, " you see no one but me and the guy who stole the pigs knew about it."

That happened in the 1930s.

Hey there NC and Hugh Now thats not right at all. Just last week I sold a cub Magneto on Ebay and when I was done I sent a second chance offer to the two next to the highest bidders. And Sold a mag to both of them also. Now in your way of thinking they should have never read my second chance emails they should have deleted them as scams. Dont be giving the people a bad rap that dont deserve it here. JON

Don't know Jon if I could tell the difference between scam 2nd chance offers or the real thing, (I never get them) But ANYTHING that is even suspect I delete. I have sold parts overseas too. several very legitamate sales to men who had poor english. you just get so you can tell the real ones. But I know what you mean as a seller, I very seldom have a 2nd chance offer accepeted and I quite often send them when I have duplicate items.

I guess from sprout and the others they were not actually contacted by the origianal seller so I guess that whould be one way to tell. I rarely get bites on second chance offers also but was very happy when the extra two guys that bit.But I do see where if I monitore a auction and have the same product and send invatations to the people that lost the bid that would be the same as the scam but I am not a scammer I will have to look into this a little as far as how to asure someone that what I have is real. Magman: Don't think for one moment I condone these scams. I truly believe someone that receives these should hit them where it hurts. Read my little story to Sprout. Sometimes the best detective work is done with alert eyes and ears as well as tight lips. Had my grand father alerted anyone about stolen pigs, he would never have found the culpert.

One time I had my farm sign at road stolen, had a good idea where it went. Called police as I felt it was their job to at least investigate. After the officer took a statment I got a phone call from someone 20 miles away. " Hear you have been loosing signs up your way overnight, was listening on police chanel with scanner and heard the dispatch send the patrol car to you." I knew right away the whole exercise was a waste. No way the officer was going to find that sign after that kind of advertizing.

Hugh,

I love the story and some great wisdom/advise. What you are saying is correct and detective basics. Common sense says, never show your hand.

With computer crimes however, it's like watching the crime and being a witness to it. What's happened is to late for the scammer. He/she cannot delete the information nor what computer or where he/she sent the information from. I'm just trying to get some contact information available and educate everyone else on the forum. I know lots of people here frequent ebay and I would feel bad if I kept my mouth shut and let someone here be scammed. This will not hurt the investigation. If for some reason this did hurt the investigation, oh well, maybe someone kept from being a victim. The scammers know they can be caught. It's the odds that law enforcement is able to devote the time, resources and money specifically to catch them. Remember, their are thousands and thousands of them. What is the chances that first, someone will report me and what is the chances that law enforcement will have the time to follow thru. Most people that report these incidents refuse to follow thru and go to court. It's easier to forget about the incident to most people then take the time off and go to court. Scammers know this and helps convince them they will not be caught. I look at this forum like a small community. Look out for each other.

Sprout: I fully realize what you are saying, and that your intentions are in the best interests of all internet users. I guess I'm just old enough to not have a lot of patience for this type of crime. When I went to school we were taught some very basic rules on parting with money. One of those was getting value for money. I might add, much of that advice came from home.

I really do not have a whole lot of patience with people that get drawn into these scams. In my home growing up I doubt if anyone over the age of 12 needed such advice. You were given basic principles on doing businees by then.

Yes but Sprout W is in a very good position to be ABLE to do something about it. He has the connections, and knows exactly who to contact. I think he is doing us all a favor by not just hitting the delete button and ignoring it. There are way too many of these scams going on for any one to investigate all of them, but when a member of the law enforcement community gets scammed, he has a responsibility to at least report it.

It's hard to believe people are so dumb as to fall for stuff like that, but I read somewhere about 5% do, and that's all the scammers need to keep operating!

If only that 5% could be reached and educated about this, the scams would dry up, and the rest of us wouldn't have to be pestered by them!
