My Cub won't start

I recently bought a 1948 Cub that runs fine when started by pulling it with a pickup. I installed a new 6v battery last week but the starter would barely turn the engine over. Had the starter rebuilt and it now turns the engine over a little faster than before, but not fast enough to start the engine. Should I buy an 8v battery?

Is the ignition system battery distributor or magneto?

Impulse coupling in the magneto. Initial thought. Coupling works under about 150 rpm and drops out over that. Coupling is used to retard the spark during starting.

Hand crank the engine. You should hear the magneto click/snap as you roll the engine over.
