Saw an IH 70 Hydro tractor at an auction yesterday. It had a IN hoader on it, can't remember the number think it was 2130 or similar, fairly heavy looking loader with quick detach. Tractor and loader looked pretty straight and prior owner had operator's manuels under seat, looked like he even used them as there were important filter numbers in there and other notes. Unfortunately this is a city county surplus/consignment auction and they sell junk first so didn't want to wait until the late hours to see it sell. What is the HP rating on this tractor and are they a good one? Have a friend with a Hydro 80 and he likes it.

It is the Hydro version of the 666. In fact, IH built a 666 Hydro for a year before relabeling it the Hydro 70. They did this because the 666 gear drive had slightly more horsepower. The Hydro 70 Diesel is rated at about 62, 666 gear has 65 horses. The loader was probably a 2350, a bit much for a tractor that size. There's no such thing as a Hydro 80, your friend must have a Hydro 86, which replaced the Hydro 70, and is the Hydro version of the 686. Most 686/Hydro 86's are identical to the 666/Hydro 70, but the late 686/Hydro 86's had the 310 German diesel instead of the American D-312. If your friend has a Hydro 84, that's a totally different machine, based off of the 684 British utility tractor.

Hayfarmer I can junp in here Allen is just about right ih came with the 656 gear and Hydro. Then they came with the 666 gear drive with the D312 diesel but they called that size Hydro the 70 so PTO HP would be in the high 60's. Made a very nice tractor getting away the glow plugs for starting.

HF,

They are the ultimate loader tractor, roughly equivalent to a 656/666. Depending on the guy you talk to, somewhere between 58 and 65 horse.

I think Cowman has one; maybe he'll jump in here and fill in the blanks.

Never heard of a 80 Hydro (lots of things I haven't heard of, tho). :>)

IH made a hydro 86. It was the newer version of the Hydro 70, basically the same just different numbers. The later Hydro 86's had the german 310 like the late 686's. IH also made a hydro 84 that was a utillity type tractor.
