can u put a rear main seal in without the special tool? or where can one purchase the tool

If you are just replaceing the seal no problem, use a small hammer and tap seal lighty. Install seal at a differant location so it has a new wear pattern on the crankshaft wear sleeve.If you are replaceing wear sleeve and seal use the proper OTC tool.

take a flat peice of steal can b square, drill 2 holes oppisite flywheel bolts, take the new seal , press it in with flywheel bolts, take it off put plastic spacer that comes with seal on , i use 1 inch shorter bolts allen head, tighten it up plastic spacer will put seal at correct depth, we have installed at least 40 rear seals this way over the years, got the shorter bolts at local army surplus store
