A friend of mine is thinking about trading or selling his 786 and was wondering what to ask. Now normally I look up the blue book price and go by that, but in this case with one so scarce [only something like 330 made] I"m not sure how to advise him. I was wondering if anyone had seen one sold recently and what it brought?

Like the guys said below, about 1800 786's were built. We've got one with about 7800 hours on the clock that has never needed a major repair. Don't see enough of them sell to give you an average price, but it will be right along the line of a 886 or 986 in similar shape.

I guess it depends where your at Pete. Here in SE Minnesota, there are atleast a dozen of them, so they are nothing more then a chore tractor to us. I guess I dont know where to say to price it. Its a good size machine, no doubt. Like the 3488 Hydro is to be be rare too, but I have seen about 6 of them as well. Goes with the area, i guess.

One locally sold at a farm sale about 7 years ago for $4200 in rough shape selling with a farm full of rough stuff. The same tractor sold two years ago looking better at a higher quality dispersal for about $7000. Definitely had no cab, seems to me it didn't have a 4 post ROPS, but that is kinda hard to imagine for an 86. NY's Hudson Valley.

Ken Updike's data book says 1845 were made.

Well obviously Ken Updike must have better info than I have been able to find. The only references I have been able to find show the 786 was built 80 to 81, with serial numbers beggining with #8601 and ending with #8936. I'll have to do some digging. Did they continue to build them after the Case merger with a different serial number or what?

1980, 8602-8935; 1981, 8936-10445. Member of the 86 series, someone else can explain that series to you, as I only know what I read about that "new" a tractor. My source indicates that it was a low budget tractor with few options. Replaced the 686 and Hydro 86 models. Produced to compete with the JD 2840/2940 and Ford 7700 in the South. Other 86 series tractors were the 886, 986, 1086, 1486, and 1586 -- most of these were produced until 1981. Source: Ken Updike's "International Harvestor Tractors 1955-1985".

The 786 were common in eastern Canada. A conservative 80 PTO. They pulled the pants right off the JD 3130-3140 and MF and AC (6080) etc. Their only competion was the White 2-85. These units, like the IHs had mass. However a good tuneup on the 358 would produce a more pleasing result then said tuneup of the Perkins. There are several 786s advertized currently in the 10K Canadian range. These were replaced by the 3088. The 786 never had a factory cab while the 3088 had a cab option. These were a decendant of the invincible 706 line. QR.
