Bought a 48 Cub w/Blue (Oil)exhaust smoke and black soot on muffler cap.
Engine runs out good and has plenty of power.

Performed compression test. Results: Dry Wet cyl. 1 110 115 2 110 114 3 106 111 4 116 123

Cleaned Air cleaner and crankcase vent tube.
Removed valve cover, it all looked clean.
Changed oil and filter twice in 4 hrs run time.
Added Mystery oil to oil and gas each time.

Now some times it runs with very very little if any blue exhaust smoke and then it goes back to smoking at others.

Any ideas this is driving me crazy???!!!!!

Thanks,
Bill

Bill:

With the compression numbers you got, I would not worry about it too much. Ellie sometimes will belch some blue smoke, but she doesn't burn much oil.

I figure it this way, for a 50+ year old machine, it is probably entitled to a little upset stomach. We are, so the Cub should be too..... :-))

Sounds like you have been doing everything right, so just go by the book and you should be ok. Check the oil regular, make sure it isn't using none. Let the MMO work it's way through, that might clear it up.

You might want to check out the Best of H.L. Chauvin series of articles on the Cub Manual server at the url below. They may be of some help to you, at least to ease your mind...

My Cubwould smoke blue if I let it idle for a while. It hasn't been doing it for a while now. Black smoke is usually too much gas. Possibly the float isn't working quite right all the time or the level is too high.
