I've been peeking hear to see if anybody would answer this one and its starting to get far enough down the list that it might be forgotten about. There are different companys that make gaskets and some have different ways of sealing. The silver gaskets don't have much more than just a fire ring and the fiber looking ones tend to have some sort of sealer around the water and oil holes. If you notice a different style gasket from say a year ago its just cause they changed distributor for cost or quallity. I haven't seen much of a problem with any of these as long the head and block deck are flat and not warped and the head bolts are good. An engine that seems to have a frequent problem with a head gasket burning out or leaking tends to be streched bolts causing it as long the head and block are true. Copper coat is a cheap trick to help seal up a head gasket, won't burn out, and easier to clean up than permatex. If anybody else has a better explanation they can be my guest.
