Taken a file to the ring gear on the flywheel to help the starter bendix engage better?? I'm getting a new bendix for Cmore, and the man told me to get a file and "clean up" the ring gear. It didn't look real bad. This should help, I would think. Also, how far in does the bendix engage in the ring gear? Looks like mine is only engaging maybe 1/2" or so. Thanks, Cmore

Years ago when dad bought our C, the ring gear was worn. Before starting, we would put it in fourth and rock it a little to move the flywheel a little and then hit the starter. We finally split it and we heated the ring gear to turn it on the flywheel. We had the flywheel sitting on top of a block of firewood and when it loosened up it dropped down around the wood. We took the flywheel off the block and flipped it and set it on the floor and then proceeded to put the ring gear back on. However, we forgot to flip the ring gear as well so we put it on backwards. Dad took a file and touched up the teeth. That's been a looooo oong time ago and the only problem we've had with it starting is getting a good ground to the battery. Solved that by bolting the ground cable to the hydraulic unit. Spins it over like we had a 12 volt in it.

Reshaping the dubbed off teeth may or may not help. I found a new bendix mating to an old worn ring gear actually jammed more frequently than the worn bendix did.

Also you’ll find the ring gear teeth are hard as an IRS auditor’s heart. You’ll probably need a small die grinder to take any metal off – a file may not touch it.

Better approach is to either reverse the worn gear or install a new one (about $35). Once the tractor is split the gear is easy to remove. Warm it up evenly with a torch - doesn’t need to be terribly hot - and it will tap right off.

To reinstall warm the gear up to 400 deg or so in the oven (do this on “girl’s night out” if you are married...). The hot gear will slip right onto the flywheel – no tapping required.

Incidentally the starter pinion should be engaging the full width of the ring gear teeth. It may look however like it’s only engaging the 1/2” or so closest to the starter, since most of the wear occurs as the pinion is driven violently into the gear by the action of the bendix.

Just wondering, does he pay in cash, barter, or other? and does he get a receipt?

Hi Cmore,

Four or 5 years ago I filed the ring gear on my Super A. Worked fine; I used a nearly new tapered file as the metal is very hard. As other posts note, when the engine is shut off, it will stop in one of 2 places 180 degrees apart, so the gear teeth that need touching up will be obvious.

May help, make sure you have a good quality file, I think the gear will be very hard. Ed

If you have the flywheel out of the tractor you can take a cold chisel and tap the ring gear evenly in the 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock positions and it will come off. Then if it is in real bad shape you can replace it. If half the gear is worn a little like you say (and as mine was) you can just turn it over, heat it so the ring expands (not cherry red) and tap it back on. This way you have a new ring gear with out the cost of one.

My vote would be for not using a file..... ....

I would agree, but don't really want to break the Super C to remove until I absolutely have to. Just thought a new bendix and a little filing may help her not "hang up". Thanks, Cmore

I spent hours working on the flywheel teeth on my H with a Dremel. It was a good excuse to buy a Dremel, but that's about it. The pic's a 'before.' After didn't look enough better to bother, and my back was bothering me.
Buying a handcrank did more good - I just give it a quarter turm when I shut it down and next time it starts right up. I'll get around to splitting him one day. I changed the oil this morning - that's enough for one month.

I don't remember which tractor I did it on ,but I drove the ring gear back towards the starter till the starter gear made full contact. I don't remember what tractor it was on though, seems like it was an H.
