300U steering gearbox question

When I had my gearbox apart to replace the gear and lever shaft, the box was held together with 3/8" bolts, which were sloppy in the holes in the box - are they supposed to be larger, or is the larger hole to permit movement on the case halves for proper mesh on the gears?

The holes are larger to permit the halves to be adjusted.

I found new shafts - Joe's Farmall in Pennsylvania got one for me, and I found the other up by Winnipeg. However, this was back in 1996 or 97 - it held up very well until this past fall when the person I sold it to must have broken a tooth on one of the gears - one of the things he is claiming is that I used the improper bolts in the gearbox when I reassembled it.

There are two dowels in box that will keep is from moving after adjusting. I believe the dowels are 7/16 from factory. But after adjusting gearbox, holes must be reamed for 1/2 dowels (may be wrong on the sizes). If these dowels are left out, the two halves of box could move. If it did move you would think the operator would notice the play in steering had gotten worse !
