Can someone give me a brief discription of how a TA works. Is it like an automatic transmission? If you were rebuilding an engine or replacing a clutch, would you automatically do the TA also? IH666

UTBJ,

It is just like the hard parts of a planetary gear set in an automatic transmission only it is manually controlled.

With the stick ahead (high), the ring gear, planetary and sun are locked as one producing a 1:1 ratio output.

With the stick back, the unit goes into reduction.

If it working now the old addadge is don't screw with it , unless ya just have to see what make it tick . The T/A is a manualy operated planatary gear reduction to give you that littel extra power with out shifting the main transmission and stoppen to do so or to slow down while working the tractor in heavy crop cond. and keeping the rpm up.

I have only worked on the old sprag clutch TA's so can't help with how the later ones like yours work.

I can tell you that I did the engine on my 966, and did the clutch a few times (had a loader on it) and never gave the TA a thought. If the TA is working good, I'd leave it alone except for making sure it is adjusted correctly and the linkage is kept lubricated.
