Replacing Temperature gauge on M

I'm waiting for my manual to arrive and checking out the little things that need fixing on my M.

The temperature gauge is busted (as in the glass is broke and the gauge is physically broken) and I think it would be good to fix that asap. There are a couple temperature gauges on ebay right now so I was going to bid on one.

How much work will it take to replace it?

Thanks, Nathan

nathan, While I wouldnt discount the possibility of finding a decent Temp gauge from eBay, I will opine and say that you may or may not end up with one that works properly. It has also been my experience that many guys who remove temp gauges from older tractors, especially if thay have been on 40 to 50 years find that the sending unit will cannot be removed without distorting the shape of the bushing, which makes it nearly impossible to reinstall and not leak. Therefore, I would suggest buying a new temp gauge as opposed to a used one sight unseen. YOu can buy one from your Case NH dealer, for not much more than you would pay to have one shipped thru eBay with no gurarantee. My .02 worth.

The best way is to drain the radiator to a level that is below the top of the head where the temperature gauge sending unit is located.

That being said, usually I skip that part and do the following. First I put some kind of penetrating oil on the fitting where the sending unit goes in the head and let is soak while I start by loosening the two nuts that hold the gauge mount to the bracket, cut the sending tube (if the gauge is junk like you noted) and pull the gauge out of the mounting bracket. Then set the new gauge in the bracket and tighten the nuts. Now try to loosen the sending unit from the head. If all goes well, I unscrew the old sending unit and quickly replace it with the new one. A little messy but then I don’t need to mess with draining the radiator. If the sending unit comes out of the head easy, this is not a difficult job.

if it gets cold where you are now is a good time to put a tank heater in. 1/2 " black pipe tee. sending unit in one end and a hose flare on the other and run the hose to the other side of the motor under the carb to the block plug. the flow of water should go from the block up to the head. mine reads 5 degrees cooler than before but it will do its job if you have problems...I plug it in for an hour and she going without the choke.
