I recently purchased an M Farmall, used to be my grandpa"s tractor as he passed away in November of last year I bought it and am going to do some work on it and get her back in business again. The problem is that, well #1 its not running, which I can handle, but more importantly #2 is that I can"t get the darn steering to free up on it. Its got a narrow front under it and it seems that the vertical shaft is froze up someplace in the column, I can turn the wheel when being pulled but it takes all I"ve got to get her to turn just a little bit, any ideas on freeing it up or replacing it would be much appreciated. Thanks alot.

Does it have add-on power steering? If so, and the engine is not running this will make it very difficult to steer! There are two bushings on the steering wheel shaft, one on the light post, the other on the support where the temp and oil gauges mount. These could be packed with hard grease or rusted up also.

Grease it up first before you go pulling anything,it may just be a little froze up.Im guessing that it was going before your Grandpa passed away, sorry by the way.if that doesnt work, take it apart a little at a time to determine just where the binding is,can save you big bucks on parts. However if i had top take a stab at it Id say the thrust bearing or the Bushings have rusted up.

Carter & Gruenewald sells a repair kit for the front bolster. It contains the upper and lower bushings, the thrust bearing and the both seals. I think its about $150 or so.

Chris Could be one of many things or a combination. The first thing I would do is jack it up to see if you turn it. If not could be the nut on top is pulling the shaft up to tight, the gear on top is on a tapper spline so it will get tight without getting tight in the housing. If it truns free maybe the thrust bearing on the bottom is bad. Could be the bearing on the front end of the steering shaft. Could be the nut holding the bearing on the warn shaft binding in the plug in frint of the bearing. There is on bolt that holds the lower splinale to the bloster shaft that is a stop so you can nut turn to far ether way if it is in the wrong hole it will cause a problem. There are four bolts and the top bolt goes in front but don't remember if it goes to the right or left front.
