can't get my M to start

I recently purchased a 48 M with a stuck engine but otherwise in pretty good shape. After a couple weeks I was able to free up the engine and valves, rebuilt carb, installed new plugs points, condenser, cap and wires. Seems to have good spark, I removed and cleaned gas tank and of course sediment bowl and fuel line are good. I think I've covered all the bases but the damn thing will not start at all, not even pop. I did get it to run a little spraying starting fluid in the carb while turning it over. I checked compression and all cylinders were around 90 PSI. There is all kinds of vaccum at the carb. Any thought will be appreciated.

Thanks everyone for the advice, sure enough the small hole from the bottom of the carb to the upper jet was completely plugged. re-cleaned everything and it started right up. Can't believe this tractor is running, it sat in my neighbors tree grove for 15 years, I'm happy to resurrect it. Thanks again.

If it won't even pop on starting fluid, better check your timing, it might be 180 degrees out. Brian

Oops, sorry, I misread your post, I thought you said it wouldn't run on ether. I better go have some more coffee. Brian

From what I read you are getting good advice, so far. As you know getting the fuel to the combustion chambers is what you got to have and with the thing you have been told before me , one of them should work. I would trace the flow of fuel from tank to carb and then as far through the carb as possible, if you are getting fuel that far but not to the cylenders then you may need a simple rebuild of the carb, as the starter fluid is going through so the only thing left if for the fuel to no be getting through the carb or it is possible that the spark may not be hot enough for gas and works with starter fluid that is not likely but it can happen. Good luck

I have been suspecting the carb, yes I have good fuel flow at the carb, this will be the 4th time I've had it off, guess I'll just start over with complete disassembly. Thanks so much for the help, I will post results in a few days.

NebraskaCowman is correct. The passages can be difficult to clean. I use a can of carb clean with a tube nozzle, and a circuit diagram of the carb, to make sure cleaner comes out appropriate holes. Evaporating fuel can varnish up to look just like part of the casting and kindof dissapear. LoL

if it is 12 volt you need a resistor. check all wires and make sure you have a good ground cable and is secure. other wise tear into the carb again. make sure you change the metal screen inline filter at the carb ?????

you may want to check manifold. It may be stopped up.

Tquaiter, when you open the drain on the carb do you have gas running out a good stream? You have almost solved your problem..good spark, only runs when sprayed with starter fluid= no fuel flow. Disconnect the fuel line into the carb to see if there is good flow, if so its in the carb..likely a float stuck or rubbing on the side. Check it this way. Get a spray bottle and fill with gasoline, mist fuel into the carb as you turn it over, if it starts to fire keep misting and keep it running...now you can be sure its carb/float. You have good signs, your compression is good , it runs on external fuel source...you'll have it purring in no time....Mike in Exeter Ontario

something is plugged in the carb. Don't feel bad, at lot of us have had to take them apart more than once.

You didn't say what year your "M" is...so check on the carb at the float chamber...if there is a "brass nut" on the outside of the float chamber, unscrew it and clean out the jets...now there is a long jet that runs horizontally thru that brass fixture...and if it is stopped up, it will not run!! You will need a very small needle to run thru that jet...or use an acetylene torch cleaning tool (wire) and once that jet is clean...she'll run!! Lotsaluck ! Jim
