I have a '49 M and every time I put it in 5th gear it pops out when you let out on the clutch. all other gears work as they should. Does anyone know what is wrong or how to fix it.

Thanks

Put it in 5 gear and when you let out on the cluch, hold the stick in place. Might stay in gear.

It could be any of the things below. If you take of the belt pulley (or blank cover if you don’t have a belt pulley) you will be able to look into the transmission and check some of the things others have mentioned.

Most likely the 4-5 slider gear and input shaft are worn allowing the slider to slide back out of gear. This is more common with h's than m's

I had a similar problem with an H. It turned out to me the high end bearing. It is located high and to the front of the transmition. Easy to change but you will have to drop the hydrolic pump if it is your problem.

Could be the little ball detents that hold in springs to keep the shifter forks in place. If the 5th gear gets a little worn, a sloppy ball detent may not be able to keep the fork in place. 5th speed gears may be worn as well. Good Luck!

You probably have a bent shifting fork.....
