Have you noticed if the coolant level in the radiator is dropping? Sounds like the oil may be contaminated from coolant. Keep a close eye
on it after changing oil. Are you using an antifreeze mixture? Hal

Victor,

I don't wanna be an alarmist, but did you measure your journals before you put in new bearings?

You didn't just throw in an undersize set of inserts to "compensate for wear" did you?

Washing babbitt throws a grey color as well. Although, after 2 hours of running time, you should be picking up some noise if this were the culprit.

Hope this isn't the case,

Allan

nope we had the crank professionally ground and put the correct size bearings in. the crank also spun freely with just the mains in and was stiff with the pistons in but thats allright. could it be the coating on the bearing or assembly grease?

Victor,

I think Sloroll has it. It is just probably "gunk" that is being flushed out of all the cracks and crannys of this new rebuild.

I would get it hot, then change the oil and filter.

Another thought: You're not using Havoline oil are ya? I've seen that stuff run a grey color too.

Hope it cleans up,

Allan

2 hours 10 minutes at a time? Engines not getting warmed up properly will be the death of them.

Mornin',

You don't suppose that we've flushed some debris out of an oil passage somewhere?

I think I'd change the oil and filter and go again. See if it repeats this habit.

Just an old man guessing, but I kinda feel the grey color is due to dirt rather than water; water usually throws a "baby poop" color, doesn't it?

Dunno,

Allan

I have gotten the gray after condensation in spring when temps/humidity run high and the cast is still cold. I got gray when I resleaved an F-14. it dissapearsd after awhile, I suppose as the sleaves settled in. A large amount of water (why I resleaved the F14) foams new oil to almost whitish green. I agree that the oil and filter should be replaced. If the gray comes back, Did the head get retourqued after the engine was run up to temp? Was the head gasket put on correct side down. Was the head and block cleaned thouroughly? I hope it is gunk getting flushed out. It is a good posibility it is. Change your oil and keep an eye on it.

Vic,

Was the block put into one of those power washer things and not hot-tanked?

If so, I think it is "mud" in the oil passages.

Tryin' to help,

Allan

it is a high pressure power washer with acid in the water.

Change the oil & check it again. Your problem seems to be severe. When you drain the oil, any water that has settled will come out of the pan first. Pay attention & see how much comes out (hold the drain plug up to the threads when draining the oil so the initial flow is slow (this way you can actually tell what is water). also check to see if you are getting any air bubbles in the radiator with the engine running. This will tell you if the head gasket has failed to seal a cyinder.
