I got a question concerning the lever on the hydrolic reservoir. What does that lever do in relation to the hydrolic system? My friend has one but installed a standard single lever valve from a hardware store to control the cylinders. Seems to me that my neighbors that I ran for years shut the system off... like a bypass. If anybody could give me any insight to what the lever does it would be great. It has got us both stumped, his doesnt "bypass" like my neighbors.

Also is the larger line to the pump the return and the smalller the supply? So the smaller line would go to the "in" port on the boughten valve?

Thanks for any help!

Are you trying to keep the tractor original looking or make it usefull around the farm? If you want to put an auxiliary single spool valve on for two way pressure hook the pressure line from the pump to the auxiliary valve first. Then the return from the vavle you can have just dump into the reservior. This bypasses the Lift-All. If you want to get real tricky tie the return from the auxiliary vavle into the feed for the Lift-All. You will now have another valved pressure port for a one way cylinder plus your two way auxiliary valve.

Does he not have to shut off the air to the filler tube also to use it that way? Or at least my SM with W/ Belly Pump and Charlyn remote does. Your Funny Dave and I am in the same boat about 3 Feet of white stuff and a 100YD walk but I can see the tires and tarp sticking out of the shed anyways. JON

The pressure port on the pump uses the small hose.

The Lift-all lever on the reservoir has to be in the rear position to get hydraulic power. I think that you will find that the lever is near or slightly past verticle when hydraulic power is available. When the pressure reaches a pre-determined level (don't know what it is) the lever will snap forward and shut off the pressure. It causes a short circuit inside the control valve which is located inside the reservoir.

Look carefully below the bottom of the lever. There is a triangular piece of sheet metal about 1.25" long that is riveted to the reservoir. That piece can be rotated to restrain the lever and cause it to remain in the rear position.

Unless you have an operator's manual or grew up with SMTAs, you might never figure out what that little rotating key does. If you are running aux valves, the Lift-all lever can be locked in the rear position permanently. I am not inclined to do this unless I sm using the hydraulics alot.

Thank you very much. I have run a super mta quite a bit but never really understood that lever. Feel better now... never can know enough about these old tractors.

Thanks again.

Redgreen is correct. The arm you are talking about is attached to the liftall control rod if I understand you correctly. It needs to be locked all the way back for the hydraulic remotes to work. At least that is my memory and it gets a little fuzzy since the tractor and I have both been sent to our corners for six months and won't be set free until spring.

I used to have a Horn loader on mine, the lever to the reservoir had to be locked back before the other lever would raise and lower the loader.
