My SMTA serial nomber76xxx has the holes drilled for a fast hitch. Will a fast hitch off a 300, 350, 400, or 450 fit on this tractor? Thanks, Marv

No to Farmall 300, 330, 350, 460, 504

Yes to Farmall 400, 450, 560

The 400 Fast Hitch will need the deck lid from the 400. As an alternative, you can make a bracket for the rocker arm and retain the SMTA lid.

Most people prefer the 400 hitch but is more difficult to mount and requires two valves to operate properly. The later hitch will take one to two hours to mount.

Not that it makes any difference to my answer, but change 330 to 340. There is no Farmall 330.

It's too bad we can't edit on this board.

The SMTA was only made for one year; 1954

Serial numbers range from 60001 to 83523.

They were built in 1954 only, and there were only 2522 made, thats what it says on this sight. Thats probably why they are so expensive! and hard to find.

Thats why I didn't post a number. Multiple sources cite the serial numbers I listed, but the numbers produced dont match...

International Harvester Tractor Data Book says 26,924 for the SMTA but if you subtract the serial number range listed, thats too high.

Other places online I have seen the number 2,522 listed which seems low but is possible.

If every serial number were used, the number works out to be 23,522.

Anybody care to shed some light on this for me?

I ve read less than 25,000 and of those, less than 2500 were Diesel. All 1954's & the very last few could have had factory FH. There are a couple out there with a decal SMTA-D-FH. Decal looked odd. Anyone else out there in YT land old enough to remember the Farm Journal full page photo ad of the SMTA-D-FH ?

The Fast Hitches were added after the fact- the holes were there on the late production tractors, and IH made kits to add them, but they didn't leave the assembly line that way. The decals were fabricated by restorers.
