How do I wire a GM alternator up to work on a 460? The alternator has a Big studd marked Battery a smaller studd marked ground and a 2 wire plug opening at top with to spades in it? How do I wire it to keep from running the battery down and still make it charge the system? Thank you and have a good day!

There is a complete wiring diagram in the archives done by Bob M and it is excellent. You can pick up the plug that goes into the connection at the top at an auto parts store. I did mine with 2 female spade connectors the first time and that worked until one touched the side and killed the regulator.

I do it fast and dirty, although granted, it probably isn't according to Hoyle.

I jump the exciter lug over to the big battery lug and leave that regulator gate living at battery potential all the time.

That works, Allan... but... the exciter winding draws current from the battery when the alternator is not charging. You might be able to leave it this way for a few days without starting the engine, but if the tractor is left unstarted for several days, you're going to have a dead battery.

I've read where you can completely discharge (below 10.5 volts) a non-deep cycle battery about 10 times. After that, the battery will essentially be ka-put. Anyone have information on this?

Hi Doug,

No, that's simply not the case; it does not drain the battery at all.

Agreed. The "bat" stud can be connected directly to the battery, or through your ammeter. I'd connect it to the ammeter, where your regulator previously connected. The first pin of your two pin connector needs to be connected per Bob M's drawing - either through a lamp or with a diode. The second pin should be connected to your BAT lug. No additional wiring is needed to keep from running your battery down.

Yup, I even run the exciter line from the swith without a lamp or diode. I haven't had a problem with run-on unless the diodes in the alternator were bad. Instead of a lamp, a DPDT (double throw, double pole) switch could be used to break the ignition and exciter line with seperate contacts.
